WEST POINT, N.Y. - The 13th-ranked Notre Dame men's lacrosse team
improved to 6-3 on the season with its third straight win as the Irish
defeated 17th-ranked Army 10-5, sending the 5-5 Cadets to their straight
loss. The victory also earned 12th-year Notre Dame head coach his 100th
win as the Irish head coach.
Juniors Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City, Md.) and Jon Harvey
(Winchester, Mass.) and sophomore Devin Ryan (Kensington, Md.) each scored
twice in the contest to lead a balanced Irish scoring attack.
Notre Dame, which jumped out to an early 4-1 first-quarter lead,
outscored the Cadets 6-1 in the final two quarters after the two teams were
deadlocked at 4-4 at intermission.
Senior defenseman Steve Fiamingo (Cincinnati, Ohio) got the Irish
on the scoreboard 2:31 into the contest with his first career goal.
Glatzel followed less than two minutes later with an unassisted score
before Army's Alex Fyfe cut into the Notre Dame lead at 9:34. Todd
Ulrich's (Baltimore, Md.) goal, with an assist from Chris Young (Manlius,
N.Y.), gave the Irish a 3-1 lead. Stedman Oakey (Charlottesville, Va.)
tallied what would be Notre Dame's final goal of the half 28 seconds later
with 6:02 remaining in the first quarter.
Army held the Irish scoreless in the second 15-minute stanza and
was able to knot the game at 4-4 before the break on three unanswered
goals. Jon Ryan, Lee Dingman and John Fernandez tallied three goal in the
first five minutes of the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4.
Steve Bishko (West Islip, N.Y.) scored an extra man goal to start
the second half at the 11:15 mark of the third quarter. Back-to-back goals
by Ryan and Harvey bolstered the Notre Dame lead to 7-4 before Dingman
pulled the Cadets to within 7-5 with 3:49 remaining in the quarter.
The Irish responded with Ryan's second goal of the quarter 49
seconds that was the first of three unassisted goals for the visitors.
Harvey and Glatzel rounded out the scoring for Notre Dame in the second
half as the Irish did not allow the Cadets to score.
Notre Dame was outshot 37-36 in the contest, but senior goalie Kirk
Howell (Nashville, Tenn.) came up with 14 saves in goal. Dominik Nogi made
13 stops in goal for the Cadets.
In picking up his 100th win with the Irish, Corrigan now has a
100-58 mark in 12-plus seasons at Notre Dame. Corrigan has enjoyed
tremendous success with the Irish as he led his teams to eight NCAA
tournament appearances. Heading into 2000, he had just one losing season
in 11 campaigns.
Notre Dame plays its next two games at home when the Irish host
Villanova on Wednesday, April 19 at 3:00 p.m. and then entertains Fairfield
on Saturday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m.
