March 14, 1998 Men's Lacrosse Gets Behind Early, Loses to Loyola (Md.) 16-8HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Notre Dame's 11th-ranked men's lacrosse team fell behind 12-1 and lost to 10th-ranked Loyola (Md.) 16-8 on Saturday in a game played at Hofstra Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. The loss marked the eighth straight loss to Loyola for the Irish who have never beaten the Greyhounds. Freshman Dave Ulrich scored three goals to lead Notre Dame, which suffered its first loss of the season at 3-1. Loyola improves to 2-1. Loyola dominated Notre Dame both statistically and on the scoreboard. The Greyhounds out shot the Irish 44-19, had 67 ground balls to 31 for Notre Dame and won 21 faceoffs to six for Notre Dame. Leading 4-1, Loyola scored eight consecutive goals in a 10-minute span in the second quarter before Ulrich scored to make it 12-2 at halftime. Two quick Loyola goals in the second half made it 14-2 before Jimmy Keenan scored the first of his two goals followed by two from Ulrich to cut the lead to 14-5 before the Greyhounds scored again for a 15-5 lead after three quarters. Ben Savage scored twice and Keenan scored another as Notre Dame outscored Loyola 3-1 in the fourth quarter for the final 16-8 margin.
