NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame men's lacrosse team swept this season's first BIG EAST Conference player of the week honors. For their efforts in Saturday's 13-5 season-opening win at Duke, senior goalie John Kemp was named the defensive player of the week and junior midfielder Jim Marlatt earned offensive player of the week accolades.

Kemp made 10 saves in the cage, while Marlatt tallied a career-high five goals and also had one assist. This is the sixth such honor for Kemp and the second for Marlatt.

Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) and the Irish defense held Duke's offense scoreless for the first 29:21 of the game. The Blue Devils, who were averaging 16.5 goals per game in their first two contests of the season, scored just once in the first half and once in the fourth quarter. It was Kemp's 19th career game with 10 or more saves and the eighth time he allowed five or fewer goals in a full contest.

Kemp is the reigning BIG EAST defensive player of the year and was tapped as the league's 2013 preseason defensive player of the year. He also was a first-team All-American last season.

    Jim Marlatt

Marlatt (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) spearheaded Notre Dame's offense, which scored the first six goals of the game. Marlatt deposited the first and sixth goals of that outburst en route to his career-high totals for goals and points (6). The five goals were the most for an Irish player since the 2010 season and he is the first to have at least six points in a game since 2009. Marlatt also had a career-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Marlatt received first-team all-league honors last season and was on the conference's all-preseason team for 2013. He copped honorable mention All-America accolades in 2012.

The third-ranked Fighting Irish return to action Sunday at No. 8 Penn State. Face-off is slated for noon (ET) in University Park, Pa.
