Irish Men's Lacrosse Places Four on Tewaaraton Award Watch List

Feb. 28, 2017

NEW YORK - For the second time in the last three seasons, Notre Dame has placed four players on the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, as senior goalkeeper Shane Doss, senior midfielder Sergio Perkovic, junior long stick midfielder John Sexton and junior attackman Mikey Wynne earned the distinction on Tuesday. The list includes the top 50 players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlight the early contenders for the 2017 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour.

Notre Dame's four student-athletes on the list are more than any other men's program in the country.

The Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour, annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Doss (Glen Ridge, New Jersey - Glen Ridge High School) entered his senior campaign as a 2017 Inside Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-American and 2017 Preseason All-ACC selection. Last season the senior allowed just 7.67 goals per game, posting a save percentage of .562. The success led Doss to be named a 2016 Third Team USILA All-American and be honored as a 2016 All-ACC selection. The goalkeeper has an overall career record of 29-10 with the Irish.

Perkovic (Bloomfield Hills, Michigan - Brother Rice) has received the honorary ACC Postgraduate Scholarship and has garnered 2017 Inside Lacrosse Preseason First Team All-America and 2017 Preseason All-ACC Team accolades. The midfielder earned first team All-American honors in each of the last two years on the team. As a junior (2016), he was named to the All-ACC Team and All-ACC Academic Team. He was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team in 2014 and 2015. The senior is a two-time All-ACC selection (2015, 2016). The midfielder has started every game (50) of his Irish career and has scored 91 goals, which ranks ninth in program history.

Sexton (Sudbury, Massachusetts - Lincoln-Sudbury) is one of four long stick midfielders that were placed on the list. The junior entered the season as a 2017 Inside Lacrosse Preseason Third Team All-American. Last season Sexton thrived as a long stick midfielder, ranking second on the team in ground balls (44) and caused turnovers (18) on his way to earning USILA Second Team All-America and All-ACC recognitions. Sexton also added three goals to his contributions for the 2016 season.

Wynne (Sykesville, Maryland - St. Paul's) led the Irish in goals in 2016 with 40, and has already scored seven over his first two games this year. The junior was selected to the 2017 Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American Honorable Mention list and named a 2017 Preseason All-ACC Team honoree. Last season Wynne was second in the ACC in goals per game, averaging 2.67 per outing. Wynne has recorded 17 hat tricks in his Notre Dame career, the most of any active member of the team.

Players not named to the initial list have several opportunities to play their way into a spot as the season progresses. Watch list additions, if applicable, will be announced in March and April. At the end of April, the field will be narrowed to 25 nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch list or players not on the watch list, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. Five men's finalists will be announced in May and invited to the 17th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, which will be held June 1 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
