Irish Set To Take On Terrapins In Top 10 Showdown

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- 
No. 8/8 Notre Dame travels east for an early-season top 10 showdown, as it takes on No. 2/2 Maryland for the first road test of the 2018 season. Faceoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. (ET). The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

The Maryland Series

  • Saturday will be the 11th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Maryland. The Irish and Terrapins are deadlocked in the series with a 5-5 record.

  • The most recent installment of the series came last season at Arlotta Stadium. The Irish were victorious, edging the Terrapins by a score of 5-4.

  • Notre Dame has claimed wins in each of the last four games and five of the past six meetings. Saturday’s game will be the fourth time the two sides have played at Maryland and the first since the 2004 season.

  • The Irish have not allowed Maryland to score more than six goals in each of the last four meetings.

Notre Dame Vs. Top 10 Teams

  • Notre Dame is 32-23 against teams ranked in the top 10 in the USILA Coaches Poll since the start of the 2008 season.

  • The Irish are 12-10 against teams ranked in the top five in the USILA Coaches Poll over the previous six seasons.

  • The last Irish win over a team ranked in the top five came with a 7-6 victory over No. 4 Duke on April 28, 2017, at Koskinen Stadium in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament.

Moving Up In The Ranks

  • Senior attackman Mikey Wynne ranks tied for sixth in program history in career goals with 110. (Full rankings in sidebar to the right).

  • Wynne is tied with former teammate and recent graduate Sergio Perkovic.

  • Wynne is just the eighth player in program history to surpass the 100-goal mark, as he scored three times against Army in the final regular season game of the 2017 season on May 6 to reach the milestone. 

The Toughest Schedule In The Country

  • Lacrosse Reference released its estimated strength of schedule prior to the start of the 2018 season for each team and determined the Irish have the toughest slate.

  • Irish opponents have a record of 34-9 entering the weekend of play for a win percentage of .791, which is the highest in the country.

  • Nine of Notre Dame’s 2018 opponents opened the season ranked in at least one of the national polls.

  • Seven of the teams on the upcoming schedule made the NCAA Championship field last season, including three of the four semifinal teams.

  • The Irish take on the defending national champion Maryland on March 3 in College Park, Maryland.

Winning Time

  • Notre Dame has played its best lacrosse when it has needed it most, outscoring opponents by a combined score of 10-2 in the fourth quarter this season.

  • Trailing Detroit 6-5 heading into the fourth quarter of the season opener, the Irish offense came alive and scored five times in the last 15 minutes to take the victory 10-7.

  • The Irish and Richmond were tied at 6-6 heading to the final frame and Notre Dame outscored the Spiders 5-1 to win the contest 11-7.

Defensive Dominance

  • The Notre Dame defense has been one of the top units in the country in the early 2018 season, as the Irish have allowed just 7.0 goals per game through the month of February.

  • Notre Dame ranks third in the NCAA in goals allowed per game and lead the ACC in the statistical category.

Gleason Goes Off

  • Junior Brendan Gleason had a day to remember against Richmond, matching his career high in points with six in the victory.

  • Gleason scored three goals, marking the fourth hat trick of his career, and a career-high three assists for the Irish.

  • The junior played a role in six of Notre Dame’s 11 goals.
