Irish and Pioneers Set For Marquee Matchup On Sunday

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- 
No. 1/1 Notre Dame travels west to take on No. 4/5 Denver in a highly anticipated non-conference matchup at Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday March 12. Faceoff is slated for 3 p.m. ET and the game will air on Altitude TV.

Irish Ranked No. 1

  • Notre Dame earned the No. 1 ranking in all of the major national polls after defeating No. 1 Maryland by a score of 5-4 on March 4. 

  • With achieving the top spot in this week’s polls, the Irish have now been ranked No. 1 on 18 occasions.

  • Notre Dame claimed the No. 1 ranking nine times last season.

The Denver Series

  • Sunday will be the 22nd meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Denver. The Irish lead the all-time series 14-7.

  • The last installment between the two sides came last season at Notre Dame. The Pioneers oulasted the Irish in a 9-8 overtime win.

  • Five of the last six meetings have gone into at least one overtime session.

  • Notre Dame is 7-2 when facing the Pioneers in Denver.

  • The last Irish victory in the series came during the 2013 season, as Notre Dame won by a final score of 13-12 in overtime.

Irish Versus Top 5 Teams

  • Notre Dame is 10-8 against teams ranked in the top five in the USILA Coaches Poll over the previous five seasons.

  • The Irish are fresh off a win over a top 5 team, as Notre Dame took down No. 1 Maryland by a final of 5-4 on March 4. 

Dominating Defense

  • The Irish allowed just four goals to Maryland, whose previous low for the 2017 season was 12 in a win over Yale.

  • Notre Dame has given up just 6.33 goals per game, ranking first in the ACC and second in the country for scoring defense.

  • The Irish held the Terrapins scoreless in the first quarter, marking the second scoreless opening 15 minutes of the season.

  • The four goals were the fewest Notre Dame has allowed in a game since defeating Maryland in 2016 by a final score of 9-4 in California.

  • The Irish average 9.67 caused turnovers per game, ranking eighth in the nation.

Epple Receives National Recognition

  • Senior defenseman Garrett Epple has been the USILA Defensive Player of the Week and the NCAA Player of the Week after helping the Irish shut down the Maryland attack in a 5-4 win on March 4.

  • Epple was also named ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the last two weeks for his performances against Michigan (2/26) and Maryland (3/4).

  • The senior’s performance against Maryland was the best by any Irish defender this season. Epple matched his career high in caused turnovers with four and collected a season-high six ground balls.

  • Epple shut down Maryland’s prolific attackman Matt Rambo, holding him scoreless in the game.
