NOTRE DAME, Ind. - University of Notre Dame senior midfielder and faceoff specialist Liam O'Connor is one of 10 men's players added to the 2014 Tewaaraton Award Watch List. The award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate lacrosse player.
O'Connor (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) becomes the third member of the Fighting Irish squad to appear on the watch list. Senior defenseman Stephen O'Hara and sophomore attackman Matt Kavanagh were named to the initial 52-man list in February.
Another round of additions for the Tewaaraton Award will be announced April 10. On April 24, the field will be narrowed to 25 nominees. Nominees can be players on the watch lists or players not on the watch lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions for players to earn a spot. Five finalists will be announced May 8 and they will be invited to the May 29 ceremony in Washington, D.C.
O'Connor leads the nation with a .701 faceoff winning percentage this season. He also has two goals, one assist and 49 ground balls. Arguably his best game of the season occurred Sunday in Notre Dame's 18-9 win over No. 7 Virginia. He went 19-for-24 in the faceoff X, tallied a goal, an assist and a game-high 11 ground balls.
Those faceoff wins contributed to two huge runs against the Cavaliers. The Fighting Irish netted five straight goals in a span of 2:20 in the second quarter to push their lead to six (8-2) and Notre Dame deposited four consecutive goals in just 1:11 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
No. 8 Notre Dame (3-2) returns to the field 4 p.m. (ET) Tuesday at Ohio State.
