Fourth-Seeded Irish To Host Marquette In NCAA Tourney First Round On Sunday

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The University of Notre Dame earned the No. 4 national seed and will play host to Marquette (8-7) in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship on Sunday, May 14.

The game is scheduled for noon ET at Arlotta Stadium and it will be telecast live on ESPNU.

Notre Dame (8-5) made it to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title game by defeating Duke in the semifinal before falling to North Carolina. Marquette won the Big East title by defeating Denver and Providence in their tournament run.

The Irish and Golden Eagles met earlier this season, with Notre Dame claiming an 11-10 victory at Arlotta Stadium on April 11.

The winner of Notre Dame's first-round contest against Marquette will take on the winner of the first-round tilt between No. 5 seed Denver and Air Force in the quarterfinals May 20 in Hempstead, New York.

Notre Dame In The NCAA Championship

  • Notre Dame owns an 18-21 record in 21 previous trips to the NCAA Championship. 
  • The 2017 seasons marks Notre Dame's 12th straight appearance in the NCAA Championship.
  • The Irish and Maryland are the only two programs to earn an NCAA berth each of the last 12 seasons.
  • Notre Dame is 13-7 over the last seven NCAA Championships, including, including national semifinal apperances in 2012 and 2015 and title game appearances in 2010 and 2014.
  • The Irish have advanced to at least the NCAA Championship quarterfinals in each of the last seven seasons, the longest active streak of any program.
  • Notre Dame defeated Air Force in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Championship before falling to eventual champion North Carolina in the quarterfinals.
  • This is the 10th time overall--and ninth time in the last 10 seasons--the Irish have earned one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA Championship.
  • The Irish also were seeded for the 2001 (5th), 2008 (6th), 2009 (7th), 2011 (4th), 2012 (4th), 2013 (2nd), 2014 (6th), 2015 (1st) and 2016 (3rd)  tournaments.
  • Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA championship weekend in 2001, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015 and played in the title game in 2010 and 2014.

The 17-team NCAA Championship field is comprised of nine automatic-qualifying teams and eight at-large squads. The top eight teams in the bracket are seeded. Four ACC programs made the field and two are seeded (Notre Dame No. 4 and Syracuse No. 2).

Notre Dame faced four of the other seeded teams this season (posting a 2-2 mark) and seven programs overall that made the NCAA field. The Irish went 5-4 against those seven squads (victories over No. 1 seed Maryland, No. 3 Ohio State, Duke, North Carolina and Marquette, with losses to No. 2 Syracuse, No. 5 Denver, Duke and North Carolina).
