1999 NCAA MEN'S LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIPS (FIRST ROUND)
SUNDAY, MAY 16, 1999 - MINNEGAN STADIUM - TOWSON, MD
IRISH BACK IN THE NCAAs - Notre Dame is making its eighth NCAA tournament appearance and seventh in the last eight seasons. After six consecutive appearances from 1992-97, the Irish missed the NCAA tournament in 1998 after finishing the season with a 5-7 record. Kevin Corrigan, the 11-year mentor for the Irish has led Notre Dame to all eight of its appearances. Corrigan's squads have posted a 1-7 record in NCAA competition.
IRISH RESULTS IN THE NCAAs - Notre Dame earned its first NCAA tourament berth in 1990 and made its second appearance in 1992. From 1992-97, the Irish were one of just six schools to garner an NCAA bid each of those six seasons. Notre Dame's only tournament win came in 1995 when the Irish stunned the lacrosse world with a 12-10 victory over fifth-seeded Duke. It marked the first, and only, time in NCAA tournament history that a team from the West advanced past the first round. Today's game at Minnegan Stadium marks the second visit for the Irish. In 1997 (its last NCAA tournament appearance), Notre Dame lost 21-5 to Loyola.

THE LAST MEETING BETWEEN THE IRISH AND HOYAS - Notre Dame, ranked 14th at the time, saw its first- quarter 4-0 lead erased as the Irish lost for the only time at home in '99 as they dropped a 12-8 decision to the then eighth-ranked Hoyas.
Notre Dame jumped out to the early four-goal lead when Brad Owen scored 58 seconds into the contest. Tom Glatzel scored both of his goals in the first 15-minute stanza, while Stedman Oakey added the other Irish score.
Georgetown was able to get on the scoreboard with 19 seconds left in the first period. The Hoyas added three more in the second quarter and held the Irish scoreless as the two teams were deadlocked at the half.
David Ulrich put the Irish up 5-4 (its last lead of the contest) with 11:59 remaining in the third quarter, but Georgetown jumped out to a 7-5 advantage with three unanswered goals in just under four minutes.
Steve Bishko and Chris Dusseau tied the score (7-7) for the third time in the contest with 4:57 remaining in the third quarter, but Georgetown took the lead for good 43 seconds later as the Hoyas scored five of the game's last six goals.
Notre Dame was outshot 53-24 by the Hoyas in the game. Irish goalkeeper Kirk Howell tied his career best with 17 saves in the game.
HEAD COACH KEVIN CORRIGAN - Kevin Corrigan is in his 11th season at the Notre Dame helm and his 13th in the collegiate ranks. The three-time Great Western Lacrosse League coach of the year earned his 100th career win in Notre Dame's 10-8 victory over Hobart on March 27. He owns a 104-69 (.601) overall ledger and an 94-54 (.635) mark with the Irish. Corrigan has guided Notre Dame to eight NCAA tournament appearances and eight (either outright or shared) conference titles. Prior to 1998, he had led the Irish to six straight tournament berths from 1992-97. Under Corrigan in 1995, Notre Dame won its first-ever NCAA tournament which propelled the Irish into the quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Previous to his tenure at Notre Dame, he served as head coach at Randolph-Macon during the 1985 and 1986 campaigns where his teams compiled a 10-15 mark.
SERIES RECORD VS. GEORGETOWN - The two teams meet for the third time in the last two seasons, and for the ninth time since the series started in 1982. Georgetown holds a 5-3 advantage in the series and has won the last three meetings between the two schools. Notre Dame's last win against the Hoyas was a 13-10 decision at home during the 1993 campaign.
Series History:
1982 W 17-8 (at Washington, DC)
1984 W 11-5 (at Washington, DC)
1989 L 7-9 (at Washington, DC)
1992 L 6-10 (at Washington, DC)
1993 W 13-10 (at Notre Dame, IN)
1994 L 8-18 (at Washington, DC)
1998 L 7-13 (at Washington, DC)
1999 L 8-12 (at Notre Dame, IN)
COMMON FOES - Five common opponents can be found on the respective '99 schedules of the Irish and Hoyas this season - Army, Butler, Penn State, Hobart and Villanova. Georgetown was 5-0 against those teams, while Notre Dame posted a 4-1 mark (the only loss was a 13-8 decision to Penn State in the season opener on February 28).
SCOUTING THE IRISH - Notre Dame heads into its matchup with Georgetown having won three straight. The Irish, who own an 8-5 record, have not lost since dropping a 5-4 decision at Ohio State on April 14. Notre Dame played seven opponents this season which were ranked in the final '99 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) final ranking. Corrigan's squad posted a 3-4 record against those teams ranked in the final poll.
The Irish are led in scoring by their three attack players - sophomores David Ulrich and Tom Glatzel and senior Chris Dusseau. Ulrich tops the Irish scoring column with 16 goals and a team-leading 28 assists (44 points). Glatzel is second in all three offensive categories - goals (24), assists (15) and points (39). Dusseau leads the team in goals scored for the fourth consecutive campaign as he has a career-best 31 goals to go along with two assists (33 points).
David's twin brother Todd, also a sophomore, and Steve Bishko, another second-year player, are tied for fourth in the Irish scoring column with 22 points each. Todd Ulrich has 13 goals and nine assists, while Bishko has 15 goals and seven assists.
Senior midfield Brad Owen is the sixth Irish player with 10 or more goals this season as he has tallied 13 times for the Irish and dished off three assists (16 points).
Offensively, the Irish have been solid, averaging 10.38 goals per game. The defense has been stellar, giving up just 8.31 goals per game, its lowest allowance since the 1996 campaign when Notre Dame opponents averaged just 7.23 goals per contest (the 94 goals allowed that season marked the second fewest by an Irish team). Corrigan's squad has held its last four opponents to eight goals or less. Irish opponents have failed to score 10 or fewer goals in eight games this season. The most goals allowed by Notre Dame this season was in the season opener (13) against Penn State.
Junior Kirk Howell, in his first year as a starter, has recorded an 8.15 goals against average and .586 save percentage. He has started all 13 games this season and played 765:54 of a possible 782:11. Howell has allowed 104 goals, while registering 147 saves.
DUSSEAU ON A SCORING ROLL - Chris Dusseau has averaged 4.3 goals in Notre Dame's last three outings. The senior attack scored two in Saturday's win over Harvard after netting a career-high six goals the previous week against Massachusetts (April 24). He also had five goals in Notre Dame's 15-7 win over Army on April 17. Dusseau leads the Irish with 31 goals this season. The 31 marks a single-season best for the Irish co-captain whose previous career-high was 29 set during the 1996 and 1997 campaigns. The two scores in the Harvard game bring his career total to 131 goals, which ties him for second on the career goals scoring list at Notre Dame. Dusseau scored his 100th career goal against Georgetown on April 10 and is one of just three Irish players to reach the milestone. The other two players to score 100-plus goals in their careers were Randy Colley (173 goals from 1992-94) and Joe Franklin (113 goals from 1983-86). He has led the Irish in scoring in each of his four seasons at Notre Dame.
DUSSEAU REACHES THE CENTURY MARK - Notre Dame senior attack Chris Dusseau became the 12th Irish player to reach the 100-point mark in his career this season. Currently third in the scoring column this season with a team-high 31 goals and two assists (33 points), Dusseau is eighth on the all-time scoring list with 113 goals and 11 assists for 124 points. Dusseau, a co-captain this season, has started all 50 games throughout his career.
TABLES TURNED - Six of the seven opponents Notre Dame lost to in 1998 were on the Irish schedule in '99. The Irish posted a 4-2 record against those foes as Corrigan's squad avenged losses to Hobart, Butler, Massachusetts and Harvard this season.
SUPER SOPHS - Notre Dame's sophomore class is represented well in the Irish scoring column this season as four of the team's five scorers are second-year players. David Ulrich leads the team in scoring with 16 goals and a team-high 28 assists (44 points), while teammate Tom Glatzel second with 24 goals and 15 assists (39 points). David's twin brother, Todd, is fourth in scoring with 13 goals and nine assists (22 points), while Steve Bishko rounds out the top five scorers with 15 goals and seven assists (22 points).
GOAL DISTRIBUTION - Notre Dame is averaging 1.21 more goals per game this season than it did a year ago. The Irish are averaging 10.38 goals in 1999 compared to 9.17 goals in 1998. The number of players who have scored 10 or more goals this season has doubled to six in '99.
HOWELL COMING UP BIG IN GOAL - Junior Kirk Howell, who spent two seasons as the backup to four-year starter Alex Cade, has been impressive for the Irish this season. He has played 765:54 of the possible 782:11 minutes and has allowed 104 goals while making 147 saves. Howell has a .586 save percentage and 8.15 goals against average. He has registered a career-high 17 saves in two games this season - Loyola and Georgetown - and has had 10 or more saves in seven of his last nine outings and in eight games overall.
TOUGH DEFENSE - Notre Dame's defense has continued to stifle opponents as the Irish have allowed just 8.31 goals per game this season. In its last four contests, Notre Dame has allowed an average of 6.75 goals. Coach Kevin Corrigan's squad has given up 10 or more goals in five contests and held eight of its opponents to under 10 goals. The Irish have been most effective in the second and fourth quarters as opponents are averaging just 1.77 goals per game.
IRISH STRONG AT HOME - In three (1994, 1995 and 1997) of the last seven years, Notre Dame finished the home portion of its season undefeated. The Irish posted 5-0 marks in both '94 and '95 and were 6-0 in '97. Corrigan's squad was 6-1 at home this season. Since 1984, Notre Dame has an 80-25 (.762) record at home and is 41-8 (.837) over the last eight seasons.
SEEING DOUBLE - Sophomores David and Todd Ulrich are the first twin brothers to play on the Notre Dame men's lacrosse team. David plays attack, while Todd is in the midfield. Both are starters in the lineup and are one of four players who played at Boys' Latin in Baltimore - the other two are Ned Webster and Tom Glatzel.
BALTIMORE HOMECOMING - Today's game marks a homecoming for several players who are from Maryland - senior David Biddison (Baltimore), sophomore Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City), senior Revere LaNoue (Baltimore), freshman Devin Ryan (Kensington), senior Ben Savage (Ellicott City), sophomores David and Todd Ulrich (Baltimore), senior Ned Webster (Baltimore) and freshman A.J. Wright (Timonium).
BROTHERLY LOVE - It's a family reunion for Irish co-captain Chris Dusseau and his brother Steve, a freshman midfielder for the Hoyas. Steve, who did not register a point in the first meeting back in April, has played in 10 of 13 contests and has 11 goals and four assists. The elder Dusseau had a goal the first time the two played against each other. Chris and Steve's father Paul is a 1971 graduate and older brother Joe is a 1996 graduate of Notre Dame.
DEGREES CONFERRED - With the conflict of today's game and graduation at Notre Dame, the 10 seniors on this year's team participated in a special commencement yesterday (Saturday) to receive their degrees. Chuck Lennon, the executive director of the alumni association and Reverend Al D'Alonzo, the academic counselor for the men's lacrosse team, presided over the ceremony and conferred the degrees on David Biddison (government), Chris Dusseau (psychology), Ray Cross (finance), Laurence Galli (English), Revere LaNoue (government), Sean Meehan (finance), Brad Owen (management information systems), Ben Savage (marketing), Steve Sepeta (marketing) and Ned Webster (communications).
