Trains, boats and buses sent the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team all around Barcelona, into the Pyrenees Mountains and to the Mediterranean Sea via Costa Brava early this week.

Monday saw the Irish rise early in the mountains of Vall de Nuria for an 8 a.m. chairlift into the heights. Many members of the Notre Dame party (among them Irish players Keaton Komatz, Austin Guiss, Kyle Hyland and Tommy McNamara) ventured higher over the morning hours—including a number that went all the way to Coma de Clot, one of the highest available peaks (at 2,726 meters) with patches of snow and slush along the way.

The entire team and staff enjoyed lunch in a picturesque chalet La Cabana dels Pastors—followed by a 5:20 p.m. train ride back toward Barcelona and then a 90-minute bus ride into the city.

After checking into their two-night headquarters hotel a few blocks away from Camp Nou, home of the world-famous FC Barcelona squad, the Irish headed back to the beach for a team dinner at Ca la Nuri, highlighted by seafood paella.

Tuesday brought a two-hour bus ride to the seacoast of Costa Brava north of Barcelona—with a 90-minute stop along the way for a guided tour of Greek and Roman ruins. The Irish spent four hours on a double-decker catamaran—with swimming, diving, warm temperatures and lunch for all. The catamaran returned to land at Cassis in Les Calanques, home to renowned artist Salvador Dali.

Wednesday provided a 10 a.m. departure from Barcelona and 75-minute trip via bus for lunch and a tour and at the amazingly-sophisticated and yet family-oriented Torres vineyards in Penedes. Six more hours west via bus brought the Irish to Madrid.

Thursday’s plans included a day of touring the city centre of Madrid, followed by an evening at the bullfights.
