NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Seven former Notre Dame men's lacrosse standouts recently were picked in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Supplemental Draft. Each of the league's eight teams made selections in the 18-round draft (144 total picks).
Andrew Irving (`11), Regis McDermott (`09), Joey Kemp (`08), Sam Barnes (`11), Ryan Hoff (`09), Grant Krebs (`10) and Neal Hicks (`10) all were selected in the draft, which was the second of three drafts slated to take place prior to the 2012 season.
Irving was the first of the seven to be picked as the Ohio Machine selected him with the first pick in the fourth round (25th overall selection). The long-stick midfielder earned All-America honors during his senior season with the Irish. McDermott, an All-America defenseman at Notre Dame, went to the Hamilton Nationals later in the fourth round (31st overall).
Kemp, a four-year starter in goal and three-time All-America honoree for the Irish, went to the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the seventh round (53rd overall). Barnes was an eighth-round selection (59th overall) of the Rochester Rattlers. Barnes received All-America honors on two occasions as a standout defenseman for the Irish.
The Denver Outlaws chose Hoff, an attackman, in the ninth round (70th overall). Hoff was a two-time All-American at Notre Dame. Krebs, a two-time All-America midfielder, went to the Nationals in the 11th round (87th overall) and Hicks, an attackman, was tabbed by the Bayhawks in the 17th round (133rd overall).
Following the 18 rounds, teams that had not reached 35 players were able to fill out their rosters by making additional selections.
Beginning last Friday, teams were able to begin claiming the remaining players (through the league's waiver process) in the MLL Player Pool to fill out their 40-man active preseason rosters. After training camp, teams must pare down their active rosters to 25 players.
Up next for the league is the 2012 MLL Collegiate Draft, which will take place Jan. 13 in Philadelphia, Pa., during the US Lacrosse National Convention.
