Errol Williams Named BIG EAST/Target Scholar-Athlete Award Winner
Irish standout awarded scholarship for postgraduate studies.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Volleyball standout Jaimie Lee (Spokane, Wash.) and track
All-American Errol Williams (Lauderhill, Fla.) are the Notre Dame
female and male recipients of the BIG EAST/Target Scholar-Athlete
award and will receive $2,000 to be used toward tuition for
graduate or professional studies.
Lee and Williams, along with All-American Pat Garrity (Monument,
Colo.), winner of the BIG EAST/Target Scholar-Athlete award in
men's basketball, are now eligible from a pool of 14 men and 14
women from the 13 BIG EAST school to earn an additional $2,000
for graduate studies. A male and a female will be selected as
the BIG EAST Scholar Athletes of the Year by the league's
Academic and Affairs Committee and will be announced in June.
Lee, Williams and Garrity were all recipients of the Byron V.
Kanaley Award. The highest and most prestigious honor, it is
awarded to senior monogram athletes who have been most exemplary
as both students and athletes.
Lee earned BIG EAST player of the year honors in both 1996 and
1997 and was an honorable mention All-America selection after
leading her team to the '97 NCAA tournament regional semifinals.
Lee also earned second-team Academic All-America honors.
Williams won the 55-meter hurdles at the BIG EAST indoor
championships and the 110-meter hurdles at the outdoor
championships. He earned All-America honors in the 55-meter
hurdles at the NCAA indoor championships in March and will make
his fourth straight NCAA appearance at the outdoor championships
in June. In addition to the Kanaley Award, Williams also was
recently named the winner of The Christopher Zorich Award which
recognizes the contributions of Notre Dame student-athletes to
the University community and the community at-large.
Garrity was a unanimous second-team All-American selection after
averaging 23.2 ppg. and 8.3 rpg. in 1997-98. The BIG EAST player
of the year as a junior in 1997 and two-time first-team BIG EAST
selection, he also is the recipient of an NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship.
