Notre Dame Track And Field Teams Set to Play host to adidas/Meyo Invitational
Notre Dame, Ind.- The Notre Dame men's and women's track and field teams competed at Indiana Fri., Jan. 30, after competing in the Purdue Open in West Lafayette, Ind., on Jan. 17, and the Red Simmons Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Jan. 24. At Indiana, the men competed against both Indiana and Tennessee and defeated the Hoosiers 85-77, but were beaten by the Volunteers 84-78. Sophomore Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.) ran strong for the Irish as he won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.71. The women competed against Indiana and were defeated 92-67. Sophomore JoAnna Deeter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was one of the bright spots for the women as she was a double winner in the mile as she ran to a time of 5:03.78 and in the 3,000 meters as she finished with a personal best and Notre Dame record of 9:46.64, a time which provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA indoor championships.
Indiana Meet Recap: In addition to Cochran's first place finish in the 200 meters, the men captured six other first-place finishes at Indiana. Senior All-American Danny Payton (Las Vegas, Nev.) captured first place in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:20.80 and sophomore Phil Miska (Toledo, Ohio) finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.74, outdistancing teammate Nicholas Fehring (Milwaukee, Wis.) who finished second with a time of 1:56.10. Senior Mike Conway (Springfield, Va.) outdistanced his All-American teammate Jason Rexing (Pickerington, Ohio) in the mile run as they finished 1-2 with times of 4:14.65 and 4:16.10 respectively. Rexing came back to win the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:21.50, and senior captain Errol Williams (Lauderhill, Fla.) matched his Notre Dame record time of 7.29 in the 55-meter hurdles as he took home first place. Cochran, Williams, Payto n, and Bobby Brown (Lauderhill, Fla.) combined to win the 4 X 400 meter relay in 3:14.11, fourth-best time in Notre Dame history.
On the women's side, freshman Carrie Lenz (London, Ont.) continued to run strong as she captured first in the 400 meters with a time of 57.45 and senior Berit Junker (Erfurt, Germany), in her first meet since coming back to Notre Dame after spending her entire junior year in Rome, finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.02. Senior Nadia Schmiedt (London, Ont.) finished second to Lenz in the 400 with a time of 57.50 and also finished second in the 600 meters with a time of 1:36.21. Junior Kelle Saxen (Canton, Ohio) finished second in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 1/2 and sophomore All-American Jennifer Engelhardt (Battle Creek, Mich.) finished third in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 1/2.
Red Simmons Invitational Recap: Both Irish squads performed well as they competed against tough competition at the Red Simmons Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. Junior Mike Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) obliterated the Notre Dame indoor pole vault record of 16-8 3/4 set by Paul Doyle in 1982 as he finished with a height of 17-6 and outdistanced his nearest competitor by a full foot and was named co-athlete of the meet. Senior Errol Williams tied the Notre Dame record in the 55-meter hurdles, set by Glenn Watson in 1987, as he sprinted to a first place in a time of 7.29. Both Brown and Williams provisionally qualified for the NCAA indoor championships with their record-setting performances. Senior All-American Danny Payton ran to a first place finish in the 600-meter run in a time of 1:20.67.
On the women's side, senior Nadia Schmiedt took home a first place finish in the 600-meter run as she finished with a time of 1:32.72. Jennifer Engelhardt and Kelle Saxen finished 2-3 in the high jump as the finished with identical heights of 5-6, and freshman Carri Lenz finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.58.
adidas/Meyo Invitational: The Irish will host the adidas/Meyo Invitational Friday and Saturday, February 6-7, at Meyo Track and Field at the Loftus Sports Center. Joining Notre Dame, the teams competing at the adidas/Meyo Invitational are Indiana, Kansas, Michigan and Michigan. Friday's events will begin with the men's pentathlon at 6:00 p.m. and will conclude with the men's distance medley relay at 8:15 p.m. On Saturday, the women's 20-lb. weight throw will kick things off at 10:30 a.m. and the men's 4 X 400 meter relay at 3:50 p.m. will conclude the meet.
