Outdoor Track Travels to Purdue for Quad Meet

Irish finish first, second at spring opener.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Irish men and women scored first and second-place finishes, respectively, in the first and only outdoor meet of the season at the Monogram Track at Moose Krause Stadium. Accumulating 205 points, the men narrowly defeated second-place Western Michigan by six points. Miami of Ohio won the women's meet, outscoring the Irish by 25 points.

Eight first-place individual finishes for Irish men and six first-place individual finishes for the women highlighted the afternoon for Notre Dame. Junior Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.) sprinted to victory in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, with times of 11.04 and 21.74, respectively. Freshman Dore DeBartolo (Aurora, Ill.) dominated the hammer throw with a toss of 176-7, outdistancing her nearest competition by nearly 17 feet and establishing a Monogram Track and Notre Dame record. DeBartolo's strong performance continued into the discus as her first-place throw of 156-3 established another school record. Freshman Natalie Hallet (Huntington Beach, Calif.) also gained a Notre Dame record in the pole vault with a vault of 10-6.

Quad Meet Recap: On the men's side, junior Phil Mishka (Toledo, Ohio), provided an encore to last season's first-place performance at the meet with another victory in the 800 Meter run in a time of 1:51.84. Immediately following in second-place was junior Tim Kober (Gillette, N.J.) with a time of 1:53.04. Indoor All-American Antonio Arce (Palmdale, Calif.) captured first in the 1500 Meter run with a time of 3:52.74. Competing in his first career outdoor home meet, freshman Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.) finished third with a strong time of 3:56.24. As for the field events, senior Adrian Irby (Citrus Heights, Calif.) won the triple jump with a distance of 47-5 3/4. Sophomore Matt O'Brien (Bryceville, Fla.) won the javelin with a throw of 177-4, outdistancing the field by over 17 feet. In his first home outdoor competition, freshman Derek Dyer (Huntington, Ind.), won the discus with a throw of 151-4. Senior Mike Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Cal.) concluded his Notre Dame career at home by vaulting to first place in the pole vault, with a height of 16-0 3/4.

For the women, junior Jennifer Engelhardt (Battle Creek, Mich.) captured the first-place mark in the high jump for the second year in a row, clearing 5-7 3/4. Sophomore Carri Lenz (London, Ont.) escaped with a victory in the 400-meter hurdles and a time of 1:02.74, narrowly defeating the second-place finisher by under one-third of a second. Sophomore Bridget O'Brien (Bloomington, Mich.) dominated the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:12.54. Following immediately in her footsteps was sophomore Erin Olson (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Valerie Siquiera (Mishawaka, Ind.), who posted times of 10:18.64 and 10:20.74, respectively.

Up Next: Notre Dame will compete in a quad meet at Purdue this Saturday, April 11. Purdue will host Wyoming and Central Michigan, in addition to the Irish. Notre Dame did not compete in this event last season.
