Notre Dame, Ind. -- Notre Dame junior All-American Ryan Shay (Central Lake, Mich.) broke a 11-year-old school record and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials later this year by running a time of 28:26.91 in the 10,000 meters Friday at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Shay placed fourth overall in the race, but was the first collegiate runner and first American, finishing behind two runners from Mexico and one from Germany. Shay's personal best and NCAA automatic qualifying time of 28:26.91 beat the previous school record of 28:44.91 set by Ron Markezich in 1989. His time also met the provisional qualifying time of 28:50.00 for the U.S. Olympic Trials and was a little over one second faster than the Olympic Games B Qualifying time, which is 28:28.00.

Other Notre Dame athletes competing at the Mt. SAC meet included freshman Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.), who finished second in the women's long jump with a leap of 19-9, and senior Tim Kober (Gillette, N.J.) who placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:49.47. The Irish had two others, sophomores Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) and Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.), record fourth-place finishes in 400 meters and 3,000-meter steeple chase.

While in California, a few Irish athletes also competed at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite at Pomona College on Friday, April 14. Grow highlighted the meet by running a personal-best and NCAA B qualifying time of 53.35, the second-fastest in school history, in the 400 meters. Freshman Jamie Volkmer (Kearney, Neb.) turned in two fourth-place finishes in the pole vault (10-11 3/4) and the triple jump (37-6 3/4), while senior Matt Thompson was fourth in the hammer throw with a mark of 173-7.

IUPUI Not Muncie: The Notre Dame track and field squads have had a change of plans. After the Ball State Invitational, scheduled for April 22, was canceled, the Irish will instead head to Indianapolis and the Indy Relays at the Michael A. Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium on the campus of IUPUI. Notre Dame is scheduled to be joined by Purdue, Ball State, Bowling Green, DePauw and host Butler this Saturday, April 22, beginning at 2 p.m.

To Be The Best: Several Irish are ranked among the best in the nation according to the NCAA list of top performances as of April 19. Senior Phil Mishka (Toledo, Ohio) is fourth in the 800 meters, senior Antonio Arce (Palmdale, Calif.) is 21st in the 5,000 meters, Ryan Shay is second in the 10,000 meters behind Stanford's Brent Hauser, sophomore Marc Striowski (Toronto, Ont.) is 29th in the 10,000, Luke Watson ranks eighth in the steeplechase and Marshaun West (Sikeston, Mo.) is 16th in the long jump.

Within The Ranks of the BIG EAST: In the BIG EAST's fourth list of best times and marks, Notre Dame occupies the top spot in eight different events. Senior All-American Chris Cochran (Crystal Lake, Ill.) has the fastest time in the BIG EAST in the 200 meters with a time of 21.55, while sophomore Liz Grow's NCAA provisional time of 53.35 in the 400-meter dash also is the best in the conference. Junior Ryan Shay's time of 28:26.91 in the 10,000 meters is almost 30 seconds faster than his nearest competitor, while cross country running mate sophomore Luke Watson is first in the steeplechase (8:46.98). Field event competitor Matt Thompson (Granite Bay, Calif.) has the top marks in both the hammer and discus and classmate Marshaun West has jumped the farthest in long jump competition (25-1 1/4). Rounding out the group is the men's 4x100-meter relay, which set a school-record time of 40.22 at the Notre Dame home meet, April 1.

Upcoming: A select group of Notre Dame track and field members will head to the prestigious Drake Relays next Saturday, April 29. The rest of the team will prepare for the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships slated for May 5-7.
