June 15, 1999

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Notre Dame senior All-American pole vaulter Mike Brown (Rancho Sante Fe, Calif.) has been voted to the GTE Men's Spring At-Large Academic All-America second team. Brown becomes the fourth Notre Dame student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors in 1998-99 after Forest Karr (hockey), Phil Murphy (men's soccer) Jenny Streiffer (women's soccer) were voted earlier in the year.

Brown graduated from the College of Science with a degree in pre-professional studies with a 3.53 cumulative grade-point average. He holds Notre Dame records in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault after finishing sixth at the 1999 NCAA indoor championships with a vault of 17-10 1/2. His outdoor record vault of 17-5 1/2 qualified him for the '99 NCAA outdoor championships. He won four BIG EAST pole vault championships during his four years and was a '99 BIG EAST/Target Scholar-Athlete Award winner. Brown will attend dental school at the University of the Pacific next year.
