Notre Dame Defeats Marquette 1-0 in Exhibition Test
Milwaukee, Wisc. -- Sophomore Andrew Aris provided the game's only goal
at the 31:34 mark of the contest as the Notre Dame men's soccer team beat
Marquette 1-0 in the squad's only exhibition test before the start of the
season.
The contest proved to be somewhat of a defensive battle in the first outing
for both teams. The Golden Eagles outshot the Irish 10-9 in the game.
Notre Dame goalkeeper Greg Velho had to make on two saves in the game.
Marquette had only one shot in the first half.
The Irish, defending BIG EAST tournament champions, will open up the 1997
campaign at Pittsburgh on Friday, August 29 at 7:15 p.m. A year ago ,
Notre Dame finished with a 14-7-2 mark and advanced to the second round of
the NCAA tournament after winning the school's first-ever NCAA game. The
Irish posted a 6-3-2 record in league action and were third in the final
regular-season standings.
Head Coach Mike Berticelli begins his eighth campaign along the Irish
sidelines. His teams have posted a 77-56-11 record in seven campaigns and
have appeared in the NCAA tournament three of the last four years.
