VELHO NAMED TO SOCCER AMERICA TEAM OF THE WEEK
Notre Dame, Ind. ---- University of Notre Dame goalkeeper GREG VELHO (Longwood, FL) who earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Irish to three 1-0 shutout wins over Eastern Illinois, Villanova and Rutgers last week, has been named to the Soccer America Collegiate Team of the Week.
VELHO helped the 23rd-ranked Irish improve to 6-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the BIG EAST. He collected 16 saves in the victories last week as Notre Dame moved into sole possession of first-place in the conference regular-season standings.
The junior has played every minute in all 10 games this season and has yet to yield a goal to a conference opponent in five outings. Against both Eastern Illinois and Rutgers, VELHO made a season-high six saves. He has a .84 goals against average this season and a .816 save percentage. He has seven shutouts in 1997 and 20 in his career.
Notre Dame, which has won four straight, travels to Dallas, Texas this weekend to face third-ranked Southern Methodist on Friday, October 3 and Texas Christian on Sunday, October 5.
