NOTRE DAME< ind. - The Notre Dame men's soccer team played its fourth consecutive overtime contest as the 18th Irish battled seventh-ranked St. John's to a 1-1 tie at Alumni Field.

It was the second time in two years that the two teams played to an overtime tie at Alumni Field. In 1996, the result was a 2-2 deadlock.

The four straight overtime games by the Irish ties the school record for consecutive overtime outings set in 1987. The Irish are now 1-1-2 in overtime games this season and own a 4-1-2 mark overall and 2-1-2 record in the BIG EAST.

St. John's, which is now 5-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the BIG EAST, got on the scoreboard first just 1:27 into the game when Stefanie Miglioranzi connected from the inside the right corner of the box off an assist from Jimmy Buscemi. Notre Dame tied the game less than 17 minutes later when freshman Shane Walton (San Diego, Calif.) drilled a shot from the top of the box off an assist from Ryan Cox (Broadview Hts., Ohio).

It was the seventh goal of the season in as many games for the Irish rookie, who has scored in all but one game thus far. The Walton-Cox scoring combination has now contributed seven of the team's 15 goals this season.

The Red Storm outshot Notre Dame 23-17 in the game and 6-3 in the two overtime periods. Irish goalkeeper Greg Velho (Longwood, Fla.) was outstanding in net as he tied his career-high with 12 saves.

Notre Dame returns to action on Tuesday for the first of two road games as the Irish face non-league foe Western Michigan in Kalamazoo at 4:00 p.m.
