Notre Dame Loses to No. 5 St. John's, 1-0

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The 24th-ranked University of Notre Dame men's soccer team lost its third straight BIG EAST game as the Irish dropped a tough 1-0 decision to defending national champion and fifth-ranked St. John's.

Shane Mulholland provided the game-winning goal, his first score of the season on an 18-yard shot that went into the right corner of the net past Notre Dame goalkeeper Greg Velho at the 65:32 mark of the contest. It was the third loss in five outings for the Irish who fell to 8-6-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the BIG EAST.

St. John's, which improved to 11-2-2 and 6-1-1 in the league, dominated the contest as they outshot Notre Dame 15-3 in the game.

All three of Notre Dame's BIG EAST losses have been decided by a goal. The Irish are 4-4 overall in one-goal games in 1997.

The Irish return to action on Friday, October 24 when they face Seton Hall at 3:00 p.m. in South Orange, N.J.
