KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Notre Dame's Aaron Maund and Brendan King were selected in Thursday's 2012 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft. Maund, a central defender, was picked by Toronto FC in the first round (12th overall pick), while King, a midfielder, went to the Portland Timbers in the second round (27th overall).

Maund (Dorchester, Mass.), a Notre Dame team captain, was a first-team all-BIG EAST selection this season. He played every possible minute during the 2011 campaign and registered two assists in addition to helping the Irish post six shutouts. Maund was a starter in all 77 matches in which he played during his Fighting Irish career and was a three-time all-BIG EAST performer and earned all-region honors twice. Maund accumulated nine points on two goals and five assists during his stellar four-year career.

    Brendan King

King (Naperville, Ill.) played in all 18 matches this season for the Fighting Irish and he tallied four points on one goal and two assists. For his career, King played in 81 games, including 39 starts, and notched 26 points on six goals and 14 assists. King will join his former Notre Dame teammate Bright Dike on the Portland roster.

The Fighting Irish have produced 14 MLS SuperDraft picks since 2007. That mark ranks second nationally. Maryland and North Carolina also have had 14 players selected since '07, while Wake Forest leads the way with 16 picks. Notre Dame has had 19 MLS SuperDraft selections during the 11-year tenure of head coach Bobby Clark.

"This is fantastic for both Brendan (King) and Aaron (Maund)," says Clark. "It's a great opportunity for both of them. They have worked very hard to get to this point. It's also very good for our program. We are one of the schools that have consistently had players selected into the MLS. Even more important, those players have all graduated. That is the most gratifying thing for me."

The Montreal Impact selected Duke's Andrew Wenger with the first overall selection in Thursday's draft, which consisted of two rounds and 38 total picks.
