New-Look Irish Face Off With Mexico On Friday

April 26, 2018

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - As a new era of University of Notre Dame men's soccer is set to officially begin on the pitch this fall, fans will get an early look at head coach Chad Riley and the 2018 Irish at Alumni Stadium this weekend. For the 13th time since 2005, Notre Dame welcomes a youth national team from Mexico to campus as part of what has become an annual exhibition series between the Irish and El Tri.

Notre Dame and the Mexico Under-20 National Team are set to meet at 6:30 p.m. (ET) on Friday. For those not in the area, live coverage will be available on ACC Network Extra (ESPN3).

Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, will be on-hand to provide opening remarks to the Alumni Stadium crowd during pregame festivities. The Notre Dame-Mexico game has regularly attracted capacity crowds in excess of 3,000 fans to the Notre Dame campus throughout the history of the series, and has been a highlighted South Bend community event each spring since its inception.

General admission tickets for Friday's match are available for $8 for adults and $5 for youth and seniors. Contact the Murnane Family Ticket Office at 833-ND-IRISH or visit for more information.

Special parking restrictions will be in effect on the Notre Dame campus Friday evening to accommodate a number of events occurring in the south end of campus athletics spaces. In addition to the Notre Dame soccer matchup with Mexico, Irish baseball and softball will be playing conference home games concurrently at Frank Eck Stadium and Melissa Cook Stadium, respectively. National recording artists The Chainsmokers will also be playing a concert inside Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center beginning at 8 p.m.

Because of this arena concert, parking will not be free on the south side of campus. Those attending the baseball, softball or men's soccer games are asked to park in the Baseball Gold, Library or Bulla lots for free, with a fee to park in the Joyce or Stadium lots being instituted for those arriving after 5 p.m. Free shuttles will run from the Bulla and Library lots to the Baseball Lot.

Notre Dame enters Friday's matchup with the Mexico U-20 squad with an 8-3-1 (.708) record in combined meetings against Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 sides from Mexico. The Irish raced to a 5-0 win against the Mexico U-18s last April at Alumni Stadium, as forward Jon Gallagher (now in the Atlanta United FC organization in the MLS) found the back of the net twice and added an assist to power the Notre Dame attack. Current sophomore midfielder Jack Casey chipped in a goal and an assist for the Irish, while junior midfielder/forward Thomas Ueland contributed three assists to the Notre Dame cause.
