NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s soccer senior forward Jon Gallagher was named as one of the 31 initial candidates for the 2017 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy. Recognizing the top player in men’s collegiate soccer annually, the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List was officially unveiled on Tuesday by United Soccer Coaches (formerly the National Soccer Coaches Association of America).

The 15 semifinalists for the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy will be determined by All-America voting conducted by NCAA Division I men's soccer coaches, with oversight from the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Men's Senior College All-America Committee in November. All NCAA Division I players are eligible to be named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist. The Watch List represents a preliminary identification of candidates in contention for the highest individual honor in college soccer.

The three finalists for the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy will be announced on Dec. 8 during the NCAA Men’s College Cup. Both the men’s and women’s MAC Hermann Trophy winners will be announced on Jan. 5, 2018, at the Missouri Athletic Club banquet in St. Louis.

Gallagher (Dundalk, Ireland) returned to the NSCAA All-South Region Second Team in 2016 after leading the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in scoring for most of his junior campaign. The College Soccer News All-America Second-Team selection notched a career-high 14 goals, seven assists and 35 points in 21 starts, with his goal and point totals pacing the ACC and his assists tally ranked in a tie for third place in the conference. He also led all ACC players with 0.67 goals per match and 1.67 points per match, and placed second in the league with five game-winning goals.

A veteran of 64 matches (43 starts) for the Irish since 2014, Gallagher has scored 26 goals and added 13 assists (65 points) during his first three collegiate seasons. He became the 10th player in Notre Dame history to lead the Irish in scoring during consecutive seasons after previously totaling nine goals, three assists and 21 points as the Monogram Club Co-Most Valuable Player as a sophomore in 2015.

In the 2017 United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll released last week, Notre Dame was one of eight ACC teams ranked among the national top 25 at number 10. The Irish, who finished 14th in last season’s final coaches poll, are one of six ACC clubs rated among the top 10 teams in the country in the preseason rankings.
