Goals From Braun And Chillemi Give Men's Soccer Another Win In Scotland, 2-0 Over Aberdeen Under-21s

Aug. 12, 2002

ABERDEEN, Scotland - The Notre Dame men's soccer team posted the most noteworthy win of its two-week summer tour of Scotland, improving to 4-0 on Monday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over the Aberdeen FC under-21 squad.

Senior forward Eric Braun scored his fourth goal of the trip early in the second half, with junior midfielder Filippo Chillemi adding the second goal midway through the half. Junior forward Devon Prescod -- who also has three goals on the trip - set up both Irish goals, the first coming when he used his speed work to free up Braun for a skillful goal and the 1-0 lead.

Later in the second half, Prescod played through the middle and unleashed a strong shot - with Chillemi knocking in the rebound for the two-goal cushion. Chillemi also played a key role inthe previous 1-0 win over the Ross County under-21s, when his corner kick led to Kevin Goldthwaite's header for the game's only scoring.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Sawyer logged the full 90 minutes, making several strong saves in the first half when the tension was at a high point.

Notre Dame has outscored its opponents 17-2 in four games during the Scotland tour, with the final game slated for Wed., Aug. 14, versus Dunwoody United (1:00 p.m., 7:00 a.m. in South Bend).

NOTRE DAME HEAD COACH BOBBY CLARK: "It was a beautiful day, a beautiful field and a beautiful result. I previously had brought three teams here to Scotland (from Dartmouth and Stanford) but we never managed to beat the Aberdeen under-21s ... until today. The team had a great experience the other night when we saw the full Aberdeen squad lose badly to the Irish (Celtic). The boys really enjoyed watching a game like that live. We also had a great time at Notre Dame alum Tom Griffin's house, it's really a mini-castle, about eight miles outside Aberdeen. It was a great experience for the Notre Dame lads. He's involved in the oil business, as Aberdeen is the capital in Britain for northshore oil. There's no question that the excellent hospitality and the great barbeque provided to us from Tom Griffin set us up for the big win. We now just have our fifth and final game to play but this already has been such a great trip for the team. All the coaches and players are very happy with how the past few days have progressed."
