    NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In front of a crowd of 358 people at the Rolfs Aquatic Center, the University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team battled head-to-head with visiting opponents Harvard and Towson on the first day of competition at the Shamrock Invitational. Harvard (4-0) leads the Irish (6-0) 121-43 after day one, but Notre Dame retains an advantage over Towson (3-6), 126-29. The Crimson lead the Tigers 141-23.

    The opening day of races was highlighted by Irish senior Christopher Johnson, who lowered the Rolfs Aquatic Center pool record in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA B-cut time of 54.17. Junior Frank Dyer earned a runner-up finish in the 50 free (20.34) and chipped in a third-place result (50.15) in the 100 fly.

    Sophomore diver Nick Nemetz claimed second place in the 1-meter dive, pacing the Irish with a final score of 328.30 points. Sophomore Michael Kreft (309.30) and senior Ryan Koter (307.95) scored third and fourth-place points, respectively.

    Day two of the Shamrock Invitational resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.

    400 Medley Relay: The Harvard “A” squad (3:17.66) built a slight lead on the backstroke thanks to Jack Pretto, before Chuck Katis pulled away from the field with a strong breaststroke leg … Oliver Lee and Chris Satterthwaite refused to relinquish the lead on the butterfly and freestyle, respectively, to earn first place for the Crimson … the Irish “A” team (3:19.95) of Bogac Ayhan, Johnson, Bill Bass, and Dyer settled for silver.

    200 Back: The Crimson’s Christian Yeager (1:48.28) outlasted teammate Tyler Rocca (1:48.97) to secure the top two spots for Harvard … Bertie Nel (1:52.41) touched the wall third to earn the bronze for the Irish … Jimmy McEldrew (1:53.71) was close behind in fourth place.

    50 Free: Lee (20.14) continued the Crimson’s winning streak, securing yet another victory for Harvard over Notre Dame’s Dyer (20.34) … Bass (20.64) also recorded a fast time for the Irish with a fifth place finish.

    100 Breast: Johnson (54.17) earned the first gold of the night for Notre Dame on his way to lowering the pool record by over a tenth of a second … Harvard’s Katis (54.73) touched second while Cameron Miller (56.05) and Zachary Stephens (56.22) finished third and fourth, respectively, for the Irish.

    100 Fly: The Crimson’s Jacob Luna (49.95) continued Harvard’s winning ways to take first place as teammate Lee (50.11) touched second … Dyer (50.15) earned third place for the Irish.

    200 Free: Harvard’s Satterthwaite (1:40.05) teamed up with Zachary Walters (1:40.24) and Gregory Roop (1:40.29) to sweep the top three positions … Kevin Hughes (1:41.13) was the highest Irish finisher, placing sixth in the event.

    1-Meter Dive: Harvard’s Mike Mosca (359.70) claimed the top overall position … Nick Nemetz (328.30), Michael Kreft (309.30), and Ryan Koter (307.95) earned second through fourth place, respectively.

    400 IM: Harvard’s Carbone (3:52.34) shattered the previous pool record by nearly four seconds en route to a decisive victory … Katis (3:56.62) and Yeager (3:58.09) provided the sweep for the Crimson … John Nappi (4:03.12) recorded the highest Irish finish, touching the wall with the fifth best time.

    400 Free Relay: The Crimson squad of Griffin Schumacher, Walters, Lee, and Satterthwaite (2:58.81) closed out the evening with another victory … the Notre Dame team of Dyer, Bass, Stephens, and John McGinley (3:01.66) swam to a second place finish.
