NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team recorded its first dual meet blemish of the season, splitting Saturday’s final day at the Shamrock Invitational in front of 480 people at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Irish (7-1) bested the Towson Tigers (3-8) 279-69 but fell to the Harvard Crimson (6-0) 264-100. Harvard outscored Towson 314-52 to complete the meet sweep.

The second day of competition was highlighted by the performances of sophomores Zachary Stephens and Kevin Hughes. Stephens, in a dramatic surge on the final lap, claimed the victory in the 200 breaststroke with an NCAA B-Cut time of 1:59.65, just shy of his own pool record that was set earlier in the season. Hughes led the way for the Irish in the 500 freestyle (4:31.85) as Notre Dame showed impressive mid-distance depth by claiming three of the top four positions in the event.

Sophomore diver Ted Wagner claimed second place in the 3-meter dive with a final score of 339.70 points. Sophomores Nick Nemetz (331.80) and Michael Kreft (330.20) earned third and fourth place, respectively.

The Irish return to action Feb. 1-2 at the Northwestern Invitational inside the Norris Aquatic Center in Evanston, Ill. The meet will be the final regular season contest for Notre Dame prior to the BIG EAST Championships.
