NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Bolstered by a sweep in the two diving events, the University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team defeated visiting Oakland University Saturday afternoon at Rolfs Aquatic Center. With the win, the Irish evened their 1999-2000 dual meet record to 4-4 overall.
Notre Dame, paced by senior Herb Huesman (Cincinnati, Ohio), won 32 points in the two diving events to the Grizzlies' zero points, as Oakland did not enter any divers. Huesman set a Irish school record with his win on the three-meter board, scoring 360.90 points, breaking Sean Hyer's previous record of 351.60 set back in 1992. Huesman then went onto win the one-meter competition, beating teammate freshman Andy Maggio (Cincinnati, Ohio), with a season-high score of 311.25.
In the swimming events, the Irish were led by double-event winners, juniors Dan Szilier (Norristown, Pa.) and Ryan Verlin (Rye, N.Y.) and sophomore Jonathan Pierce (Newburgh, Ind.). Szilier swept both the breaststroke events, finishing with a time of 58.82 in the 100 and 2:04.89 in the 200 race, and Verlin touched first in both the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 51.05, and 200 butterfly (1:51.94). Pierce, meanwhile, recorded first-place finishes in the distance freestyle events, including the 1650 freestyle (16:09.33) and the 500 freestyle (4:42.31).
The visiting Grizzlies were paced by Dave Hartzel, who won the 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke and the 400 individual medley.
Notre Dame next and final dual meet of the season will be Saturday, Feb. 5, at 1 p.m. at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
