INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The longest-standing record in the Notre Dame men's swimming and diving annals was broken Thursday at the IU Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI during the second day of the 2009 BIG EAST Conference Championships. Twice.

Andrew Hoffman and John Lytle each bettered the 50 Free mark set by 2005 graduate Frank Krakowski (20.45) during the 2002-03 season. Hoffman (20.39) accomplished the feat during the evening's consolation round with Lytle going 20.05 one heat later.

Steven Brus won the 500 Free by cutting over two and a half seconds off his preliminary result to earn an NCAA B-cut time.

Notre Dame (296) remains on top of the standings with Louisville (271) and Pittsburgh (184.5) in pursuit.

500 Free: An incredible Irish display in the prelims yielded six swimmers that donned the gold and blue in the finals ... Brus got out to a two-yard lead and never faded ... he earned his conference title in 4:23.99, a season-best for the Irish ... Michael Sullivan (4:25.13) was second and Jeff Wood (4:26.32) was fourth ... Andrew Deters (4:26.66) was fifth and MacKenzie LeBlanc (4:26.75), the league's recordholder in the event, was seventh ... Danny Lutkus scored points with a 4:30.49 ... in the consolation finals, Joshua Nosal led for the first 400 yards, but could not withstand a charge by Connecticut's John Hogan over the last few lengths ... Hogan touched in 4:27.11, with Nosal checking in with a 4:27.34.

200 Individual Medley: Bill Bauman (1:50.63) staged a fierce rally to finish third in the consolation finals to record the team's top time of the season in the event.

50 Free: Hoffman scorched through with a record-breaking 20.39 in the consolation round to become the fastest Irish swimmer to ever finish the event ... however, his record was short-lived as Lytle (20.05) posted a fifth-place finish to snatch the record ... Josh Schneider set a BIG EAST record during the morning session in 19.17, then finished first in 19.38 to win the evening race.

200 Free Relay: Lytle went 20.08 to start the engines for the Irish ... Nosal put the Irish in second to set the table for Lutkus, who steered the crew to a school record in 1:19.42 for silver honors and an NCAA B-cut performance.
