Men's Swimming And Diving Falls To Pittsburgh, 201-99

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The three-time defending BIG EAST champion University of Pittsburgh Panthers won 13 of 16 events to defeat the visiting University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish in men's dual meet swimming and diving action Saturday at Trees Pool. With the loss, the Irish fell to 0-3 in dual meet action. The Irish got two wins in the swimming events, while senior Herb Huesman won the meet-opening one-meter diving competition with a score of 182.55. Huesman was followed by freshman Andy Maggio, who finished second with a score of 178.40, while freshmen Tony Xie and Joseph Miller placed fifth and seventh respectively. In the swimming events, senior captain Ray Fitzpatrick swam a season-best time of 1:42.04 to capture the 200 freestyle. Notre Dame's third win came in the 200 butterfly when junior Ryan Verlin recorded a season-best time of 1:53.26, beating Pittsburgh's Adrian Figueroa, who finished in 1:53.47. The Irish also got second-place finishes from sophomore Jonathan Pierce in the 1000 freestyle (9:35.94), sophomore David Horak in the 100 backstroke (52.89), junior Brian Skorney in the 200 backstroke (1:58.93), junior Dan Szilier in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.74), Verlin in the 100 butterfly (52.22), Maggio in three-meter diving (172.50) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Fitzpatrick, sophomore Mike Koss, Horak and junior James Scott-Browne (3:06.44). Pittsburgh was led by four-time winner Brian Elko and three-time winner Jerry Koller. The Irish will be back in action next Friday, November 19, at home against Western Ontario at 3 p.m. in Rolfs Aquatic Center.
