Men's Swimming Opens Dual Meet Season with Win Over Western Ontario

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Notre Dame's men's swimming team opened its 1997-98 dual meet season with a 133-63 win over Western Ontario at Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Irish won the first nine events on their to building a 106-25 lead over the Mustangs after nine of 11 events in the meet.

Senior Ron Royer was a double winner for Notre Dame, claiming the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. One of the best performances of the meet for the Irish came from John Lubker, who won the 1000 freestyle in 9:40.36, the fifth-best time in Notre Dame history.

Other winners for the Irish were Mike Doyle in the 50 free, Robert Fetter in the 200 individual medley, Ray Fitzpatrick in the 200 butterfly, Vince Kuna in the 100 freestyle and Sean Casey in the 200 backstroke.

Notre Dame returns to the pool when Ball State travels to Rolfs Aquatic Center on Fri., Oct. 31, at 6:00 p.m.
