Notre Dame Men Remain in First after Day Two of Notre Dame Invitational; Women in Second
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Notre Dame men's swimming and
diving team remains in first place after day two of the Notre
Dame Invitational. The Irish have 614 points while Syracuse is
in second place with 509 points. The Notre Dame women are
currently in second place with 515 points and trail Michigan,
which is in first place with 664 points.
On the men's side, sophomores Antonio Fonseca and Herb Huesman
were the only winners for the Irish. Fonseca won the 100-yard
breaststroke with a time of :57.58 and Huesman easily won the
three-meter diving competition with 552.80 points. Notre Dame
junior Scott Zumbach placed second in the 400-yard individual
medley with a time of 3:59.73, and Notre Dame sophomore Ray
Fitzpatrick finished second in the 200-yard freestyle as he
swam to a time of 1:40.16.
On the women's side, senior Linda Gallo led the Irish as she
finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of
1:51.20, swam on Notre Dame's 200-yard medley relay team, which
finished second with a time of 1:48.08, and swam anchor on
Notre Dame's 800-yard freestyle relay, which finished second
with a time of 7:37.97. Notre Dame sophomore Shannon Suddarth
finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke and junior
Brittany Kline placed third in the same event with a time of
1:05.69.
Numerous records fell on the second day of the Notre Dame
Invitational. Michigan freshman Kasey Harris set a pool and
meet record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of
4:19.07. Michigan also set records in the women's 200-yard
indvidual medley relay and the women's 800-yard freestyle
relay. Sophomore Miro Vucetic of Syracuse set the only other
record as he swam to a time of 1:38.96 in the 200-yard
freestyle.
The Notre Dame Invitational continues tomorrow with
preliminaries starting at 10:00 a.m. and finals beginning at
6:30 p.m.
