CLOVIS, Calif. - Several current and former Notre Dame men's and women's swimmers
have qualified and participated in the Phillips 66 National
Swimming Championships in Clovis, Calif. On the second of four
days at the championships, Irish sophomore Dan Szilier turned in
the best performance with a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter
breaststroke with a time of 2:17.13 in the trials and 2:17.43 in
the finals. With his seventh-place finish, Szilier becomes
eligible for selection to the 1999 World University Games, to be
held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, on July 1-13, 1999.
Junior Alison Newell placed 16th in the 200-meter butterfly in
2:14.76 in the trials and 2:16.79 in the finals. Junior
All-American Shannon Suddarth finished 21st in the 200-meter
breaststroke with times of 2:35.50 in the trials and 2:39.13 in
the finals. Former Irish All-American and 1997 World University
Games bronze medalist Erin Brooks placed 24th in the 200-meter
backstroke in 2:18.23 in the trials and 2:21.05 in the finals.
Sophomore Carrie Nixon finished 34th in the 100-meter freestyle
while junior Liz Barger was 71st in the 200-meter butterfly.
Sophomore James Scott-Browne was 45th in the 800-meter freestyle
