NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team returned to the Eck Tennis Pavilion after an extended time away Saturday, splitting the two matches of its doubleheader with a 6-1 loss to Atlantic Coast Conference opponent and No. 3 Virginia and a 6-1 win over DePaul.

How It Happened

Virginia
In the first match of the afternoon, the Cavaliers (15-0, 2-0 ACC) won the doubles point, earning victories on Courts 1 and 3 to claim the early advantage.

Virginia then won three straight singles matches to clinch the conference victory at 4-0, snatching straight-set decisions on Courts 4, 1, and 3.

Freshman Guillermo Cabrera helped the Irish get on the board next, winning 6-4, 6-4 over Luca Corinteli at the No. 6 position. At Nos. 2 and 5, senior Eddy Covalschi and freshman Matt Gamble respectively forced third sets before ultimately falling at each position.

DePaul
In the evening showdown, the Irish (9-6, 1-2 ACC) came away with the point at doubles, winning quick matches on Courts 1 and 2 to go ahead. Twelfth-ranked seniors Josh Hagar and Eddy Covalschi upended Alex Galoustian and Nathan de Veer 6-1 at the top spot to begin the match, while junior Brendon Kempin and freshman Johnathan Small won 6-3 over Tim Corwin and Boris Spanjaard to clinch.

Gamble gave the Irish a 2-0 lead, handling Christopher Casati in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 4. He was followed by Cabrera, who scooped up his second win of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Boris Spanjaard at the No. 3 position. Hagar clinched the victory, downing de Veer 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot.

Kempin added to the lead with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Fran Tonejc on Court 6, while Small defeated Corwin 6-2, 7-5 on Court 5.

DePaul (10-6) didn’t score until the final match was decided, with Galoustian defeating sophomore Alex Lebedev in three sets on Court 2.
