ATHENS, Ga. - University of Notre Dame sophomore Ryan Sachire was a 6-2, 6-4
winner over Jong-Min Lee of California-Santa Barbara Wednesday
afternoon in the first round of the singles tournament at the
NCAA Men's Tennis Championships. Sachire plays Doug Root of Duke
in the second round of the 64-player tournament on Thursday as
Root was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Martin Sjoqvist of Mississippi in
the first round.
Sachire is a seeded player in the event which guarantees him of
All-American status for 1998 by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association. The Notre Dame doubles team of Brian Patterson and
Jakub Pietrowski opens play in the 32-duo doubles tournament
against Frank Morgan and Alex Waske of San Diego State on
Thursday.
