OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Three singles wins highlighted a tough first day for the Notre Dame men’s tennis team at the elite OFCC Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill., on Friday.
Earning wins in singles competition was senior Blas Moros, junior Billy Pecor and freshman Quentin Monaghan. Moros topped Texas’ Chris Camillone, 6-1, 6-2, while Pecor knocked off Pepperdine’s David Sofaer, 6-3, 6-4. Monaghan earned his first collegiate win against Illinois’ Julian Childers, 6-1, 6-0.
In close losses, sophomore Wyatt McCoy fell to No. 45 Tom Jomby of Kentucky, 7-6 (8), 7-5 and No. 24 Greg Andrews fell to California’s Campbell Johnson, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-6 (5). Freshman Alex Lawson lost to Texas’ Alex Hilliard, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Hovhannisyan/Gryzelko (PEP) def. Quentin Monaghan / Wyatt McCoy (ND), 9-7
Picking up wins were freshmen Kenny Sabacinski and Nicolas Montoya and sophomore Michael Fredericka. Sabacinski topped Illinois State’s Muddappa Appanervanda, 6-1, 6-2, while Montoya defeated Freddy Abunku of Xavier by the same score. Fredericka also won by the same score over Xavier’s Patrick Bandy.
In doubles action Montoya teamed with Carman from Xavier to knock off Marks and Kuelker from Cleveland State, 8-5.
