Men's Tennis Earns Eight Singles Wins In Day Two Of The Tom Fallon Invitational

In the second day of play at the Tom Fallon Invitational, the Notre Dame men's tennis team was lead by sophomore Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman), who notched both a singles and a doubles win to run his record to 5-0 at the event. As a team, the Irish combined for eight singles wins and six doubles victories. Stahl first beat Alex Forger of Michigan State 6-4, 6-2 in singles action. He then combined with junior Patrick Callaghan (Iowa City, Iowa/Iowa City West) for an 8-6 win over Kalfayan and Felton of Harvard. In addition to Stahl's match, the Irish played three other singles matches against Spartan opposition; with Sean Tan (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) and Takashi Yoshii (Tokyo, Japan/The American School of Japan) recording wins. Tan downed John Stratton 6-4, 7-5, and Yoshii won a tightly contested match over Clark Richardson 7-6 (4), 4-6, 1-0 (10-3). Michigan State's Austin Brooks earned a three-set win over Irish newcomer Brian Kelley 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-6). As singles play continued, sophomore Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio) lead an Irish contingent that included six more of his teammates against Ball State opposition. Havens won his match 6-1, 6-7 1-0 (10-2). The five other Notre Dame players to earn wins over Ball State were David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich), Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan), Casey Watt (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland), Matt Johnson (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) and Callaghan, who all won in straight sets. Anderson defeated Shaun Bussert 6-2, 6-3, while Davis overcame Jorge Rodriguez 6-4, 6-4. Watt earned a 6-1, 6-2 win against Andres Monroy. Johnson and Callaghan chipped in with wins over Derek Carpenter and Jon Wegner 6-3, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-2 respectively. However, Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) was forced to retire in his match against Ball State's Zane Smith. Play resumed in the afternoon with two rounds of doubles action. All told, the Irish notched six doubles wins against five doubles losses. The duo of Tan and Johnson led the way in doubles play as they were able to secure two victories, first against Kalfayan and Felton of Harvard, 8-4, followed by an 8-2 win versus Hulewicz and Richardson of Michigan State. Callaghan teamed with senior Santiago Montoya (Austin, Texas/St. Stephen's Episcopal) to earn his first doubles victory on the day (his second came with Stahl), 8-4 over the mixed team of Noel from Western Michigan and Notre Dame's Brian Kelly. The final two Irish doubles wins were recorded over players from Michigan State. David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Davis recorded an 8-3 win over Norville and Rasmussen, while Watt and Havens defeated Gardner and Brooks, 8-4. The Tom Fallon Invitational concludes tomorrow, October 12, with a round of singles play at 10:00 a.m. followed by doubles play at noon.
