No. 23 Notre Dame Upsets No. 13 Duke
DURHAM, N.C. -- The 21st-ranked Notre Dame men's tennis team upset 13th-ranked Duke 4-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Duke Tennis Stadium. The Irish, which have won 11 of their last 12 matches, are now 13-3, while Duke fell to 7-4.
With the match tied at three points apiece, Notre Dame sophomore Matt Horsley defeated Duke freshmen Marko Cerenko 6-2, 6-7, 6-2 to clinch the victory for the Irish.
Notre Dame won the first point of the match with victories at number two and three doubles. Senior Dan Rothschild and senior Eric Enloe combined for an 8-4 win at number two, before sophomore Ryan Sachire and Horsley took an 8-6 victory at number three.
Duke evened the score with a victory at number five singles but senior Jakub Pietrowski handed Dmitry Muzyka a 6-2, 6-2 loss at number two singles to give Notre Dame a 2-1 lead. The Blue Devils drew even with a win at number four singles before Sachire defeated 13th-ranked Doug Root 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 to win at number one singles.
Duke won the number three singles match to even the score at three-apiece before Horsley sealed the victory for the Irish.
