Notre Dame Downs Ball State 6-1
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Notre Dame's 14th-ranked men's tennis team swept the doubles and won five of six singles matches for a 6-1 win over host Ball State on Friday morning. With the win the Irish improve to 14-4 and will seventh-ranked Texas in Austin on Saturday before traveling to sixth-ranked Illinois on Monday.
Notre Dame opened the match by winning the doubles point with wins at all three doubles. Seniors Vijay Freeman and Dan Rothschils won a 9-7 match at No. 1 doubles while sophomores Matt Horsley and Ryan Sachire were 8-1 winners at No. 2. Junior Brian Patterson and freshman Matt Daly completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
The Irish cruised through the first four matches in singles without losing a set. Sachire, Patterson, Rothschild and Horsley each won in straight sets. Senior Eric Enloe rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. Ball State won its only point as Joe Gabey beat Andy Warford 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
The win was the 10th straight for the Irish over the Cardinals since a 7-2 Ball State win in 1989 in Bobby Bayliss' second year as Notre Dame head coach.
