NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Four University of Notre Dame singles players and a doubles duo earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings and the Irish are slotted at No. 30 in the country to open the spring season, the association announced recently.
Leading the way for the Irish is reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Greg Andrews as he enters the spring season ranked No. 80 after closing out the fall with a 7-5 record, including a 4-2 mark against ranked foes. The junior ended 2012 ranked No. 55 and opened the fall of 2012 ranked No. 24.
Following Andrews is junior Billy Pecor (No. 88), senior Blas Moros (No. T-110) and sophomore Wyatt McCoy (No. 120). Pecor went 7-4 during the fall, while Moros was a perfect 10-0. McCoy turned in a 10-3 record. Moros went 2-0 against ranked opponents, while Pecor was 1-0.
In doubles, the tandem of Andrews and Spencer Talmadge is ranked No. 51 to open the spring season. During the fall the duo went 10-5.
The Irish, who ended the 2011-12 season ranked No. 29, open as the top-ranked team in the BIG EAST at No. 30.
Notre Dame kicks off the spring season on Saturday, Jan. 19 when it welcomes in Marquette and Western Illinois to Eck Tennis Pavilion. The match against the Golden Eagles is set for 11 a.m. (ET), while the showdown with the Leathernecks is slated for 5 p.m.
