Andrews Advances To The Round Of 32 In NCAA Singles Championship
Senior Greg Andrews

ATHENS, Ga. --- Ever since coming to Notre Dame, senior Greg Andrews has dreamed of becoming an All-American. He says that the goal was something he set for himself after his older brother, Rob, was named an All-American swimmer at Stanford University. Today, Andrews came a little bit closer to that goal, as he advanced to the second round of the NCAA Singles Championship with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Patrick Pradella of Baylor.

“I knew going into the match that Patrick Pradella is a great player and that it was going to be a hard-fought match,” Andrews said. “I thought I competed well today and I couldn’t be happier that I get to continue playing for the Fighting Irish.”

Andrews took an early lead in the first set, going up 3-1 against Pradella. The second set brought more difficulties, as the set was tied at 4-4 with Pradella serving. Andrews broke his opponent, allowing him to serve for the match. The final point ended with the Baylor senior failing to return Andrews’ monster serve.

To be named an All-American, Andrews will need to advance to the round of 16 in the tournament, which means he will only need to win one more match. Back in April, Andrews admitted that over his time at Notre Dame, he had come to realize that the title of All-American wasn’t as important as playing and progressing like an All-American player. Going into his next match, that’s surely what he will do.

In addition to the round of 32, Andrews will team up with partner sophomore Alex Lawson to take on Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland of Georgia in the first round of the Doubles Championship tomorrow at 5 p.m.
