A former monogram winner in both football and golf, Heaton's tenure as the Monogram Club's president ('99-'01) included an expansion of the funding that the Club provides to current student-athletes through the various Student Welare initiatives. These projects included: the "O.S.C.A.R.S." all-sports recognition banquet, the acquisition of 40 laptop computers for student-athlete use when they are away from campus during team travel, funding of conference and postseason awards, and providing student-athlete handbooks and planners.

A partner with O'Keefe, Lyons & Hynes, LLC, since 1980, Heaton received his undergraduate ('68) and law school ('71) degrees from Notre Dame before serving in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps from 1971-75, as a lieutenant stationed at Camp Lejuene, N.C. and Newport, R.I. He then was a lawyer with Hubachek, Kelly, Rauch and Kirby ('75-'76) before joining the O'Keefe law firm in 1976. He currently specializes in property tax abatements and appeals.

Heaton was a receiver and placekicker at Notre Dame, playing four seasons and earning a monogram as a senior in the fall of 1967. He also went on to monogram with the golf team the following spring of 1968.

The second of five children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Heaton, he was born Oct. 31, 1946, in Seneca, Ill. He went on to a standout athletic career at Marquette High School in Ottawa, Ill., racking up 16 varsity letters while competing in golf, football, basketball, baseball and track.

Heaton has been actively involved as a director, officer and president of the Notre Dame Club of Chicago since 1975, including currently serving as vice president of its scholarship foundation. He is a former board member and president with Ronald Knox Montessori School in Wilmette (`77-'82) and was a board member and officer with Saints Faith Hope and Charity School in Winnetka ('85-'88). Heaton also was a youth soccer and basketball coach in Wilmette ('77-'87) and served as a board member, manager and president of the Loyola Academy hockey club from '92-'03.

Heaton and the former Barbara Sinon (Saint Mary's '68, ND '69) were married on Aug. 17, 1968, in Ottawa, Ill. The couple has four children: daughter Anne (ND '94) and sons Joe, Conor and Kevin.
