AS A JUNIOR (2023-24)

  • Notched two best times at the Ohio State Winter Invite — 200 back (1:47.08) and 50 free (19.99). Also went a season best 48.78 in the 100 back
  • Brought home ninth in 100 back (50.34), 10th in 50 free (20.56) and 200 back (1:48.71), and helped take fourth in the 200 free relay, fifth in the 400 free relay, eighth in the 200 medley relay, and ninth in the 400 medley relay at the Tim Welsh Classic.
  • Swam the 50 free (20.87) and 200 back (1:49.48) against Princeton and Navy. Also competed on three relays
  • Made three finals at the Ohio State Fall Invitational. Best finish was 14th in the 200 back (1:47.91)
  • Swam the 50 free (20.64), 100 back (50.35) and 200 back (1:49.55) against Pitt and Penn State. Also swam two relays, the 200 medley and 200 free
  • Competed against Purdue in the 50 free (21.56), 100 back (50.84), 200 back (1:53.39) and 200 medley relay (free)

AS A SOPHOMORE (2022-23)

  • Posted three personal bests at the Ohio State Winter Invite: 50 free (20.21), 50 back (21.99) and 100 back (47.98). Finished second in both the 50 free and 100 back
  • Ohio State Invitational B finalist in the 100 back (49.82)

AS A FRESHMAN (2021-22)

  • Finished eighth in the 200 backstroke (1:51.27) at the Tim Welsh Classic.
  • Placed 19th in the 200 backstroke finals (1:50.21) at the Ohio State Invitational.
  • Finished fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:52.52) and seventh in the 100 backstroke (51.54) in the dual meet against Purdue.
  • Placed ninth in the 50 freestyle (21.85) in his first collegiate meet against Pittsburgh and Cleveland State.

PREP AND PERSONAL

  • Named a USA Scholastic All-American (twice) and to the high Honor Roll multiple times.
  • “The academics are unparalleled and the athletics are some of the top in the nation. I also loved the culture around campus and the friendliness of the student population,” Ortanes said.
  • Was a team captain at Cherry Creek as a junior and senior.
  • Earned high school All-American honors in the 400 Free (freshman and sophomore) and 200 Medley (sophomore).
  • Named first-team all-state in the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle as a sophomore.
  • Best times: 50 Free (20.38), 100 Free (45.86), 50 Back (22.56), 100 Back (48.76), 200 Back (1:47.37), 100 Fly (49.23).
  • Team was 5A state champions, and event state champions in the 200 Medley and 400 Free Relays.
  • Swam for Aquawolves club, and holds club record in 50 Free, 50 Back, 50 Fly, 100 Back and 200 Back.
  • Placed fifth in 200 Medley Relay at junior nationals, and placed 12th (50 Free) and 13th (100 Back) as an individual at junior nationals.
  • Worked with SAAC to put on a Thanksgiving dinner for 40 families in need, and worked with a Christmas gift drive for families in need.
  • Majoring in mechanical engineering
  • Parents are Lynne (attended Westmont College) and Dennis (attended Cal State Long Beach) Ortanes. Has one brother, Parker.
