Notre Dame Women's Basketball
Notre Dame vs. Louisville
January 12, 2011
Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center • Notre Dame, Ind.

Notre Dame Head Coach Muffet McGraw

Opening Statements...
"I think there was a little hangover from the UConn game. It didn't seem like we had much energy and didn't come out with the same intensity that we have had every single game this year. We will certainly fix that quickly though. I thought that we played very well in spurts. Dev (Peters) made some big baskets to help build a big lead. But defensively I don't think we were on our game."

On not coming out with the same energy and intensity...
"It surprised me because we have played so well all year. When you walked into the arena on Saturday there was such an electricity in the air and I just didn't feel that today. We started off poorly but we fixed that and began to play better. They (Louisville) are a good team, but their so young which means they're going to get better."

On the big run in the first half...
"I thought that Dev had some nice plays in there. We were able to get some layups and good shots as well as some turnovers, which allowed us to get going in transition. I thought that Kayla (McBride) came off the bench and gave us some great offensive minutes. We finally found a little rhythm offensively and probably rebounded a little better in that stretch too which I think we did a great job of all night."

On playing at home...
"I think it's simply the crowd that has so much to do with playing on your home court. You're obviously comfortable because you're shooting in the same gym all the time and you typically shoot better at home than on the road. The feeling of having the crowd on your side certainly provides that extra level of comfort."

Notre Dame Players

Brittany Mallory • Senior • Guard

On playing at home...
"It's comfort. When we go on the road sometimes teams are sponsored by Nike (rather than Adidas) so the ball is a little different and could have a different feel. At home you use the same ball all the time and you know your team and the fans are all behind you. I think you just gain more confidence when playing at home."

On guarding Shoni Schimmel...
"We knew we had to find her at all times. Once she crossed halfcourt she was going to be looking for her shot as well as her teammates. We just had to know where she was at all times. A few times we let her get open on the three point line, but for the most part we did a good job."

Kayla McBride • Freshman • Guard

On Kayla's good first half play...
"I definitely saw an opening in the middle of the zone especially in one of our man sets. There was a post isolated so I could drive and there were also openings on the baseline. I just took advantage, saw the green light, and went for it."

On coming off the bench and providing a spark ...
"I kind of just have to relax. I think there are big games, particularly UConn, where I was a little nervous. Whereas in this game I was relaxed and knew where I wanted the ball for some good shots. They were going in today, which is good."

Louisville Head Coach Jeff Walz

On letting the game get away from Louisville ...
"We just didn't execute very well. I think it was the first eight or nine minutes of the game that I thought we played well. I thought we competed. We did a pretty decent job of boxing out and then we unfortunately stopped playing hard. It was 21-20 with 5:28 to go in the half and we scored two points and gave up 16 (the rest of the half). We let our emotions get the best of us. We paid the price for it."

On Notre Dame shutting down Shoni Schimmel ...
"They did a nice job of chasing her and harassing her, which more teams are going to do. It's just a situation where Shoni is going to continue to have to let the game come to her. She got a little frustrated at times and that's just a growing cycle. She's going to have to continue to learn from this game. We'll watch film. I'll break things down. She's still a fantastic player. We're going to have to find someone else who can come in and give her a breather - keep her on the floor but move her two spots up, which, then I can run her off some more screens without her having to put the ball on the floor at all times."

On Notre Dame's defense ...
"They're a very physical team. I'd hate to look back at the film and see how many point-blank layups we just missed. I mean, sure they tested them but you have to make some contact. When you're on the road, you have to make those."

On Devereaux Peters ...
"She's a great player. When I was at Maryland we recruited her extremely hard. I think we were one of her final two or three choices. When Dev wants to play hard she's as good as she wants (to be). She's growing into her own now, being a senior. When she plays hard she's a pretty impressive player."
