Notre Dame vs. UCLA

Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center - Notre Dame, Ind.
Notre Dame Head Coach Muffet McGraw
"I thought that we would play better defensively. We really did a poor job in our man-to-man, and didn't help each other out. We missed a lot of free throws, and I didn't think we got to the line enough. They made big plays. When we got the lead, we didn't go down and make a defensive stand. We finally got the lead, and then we turned it over, and then they scored. I thought we looked young out there. Not having Brittany in the line up was big. She is our calming force out there. Natalie made some great plays to get the lead back, and then we just couldn't get a stop. The two-on-one layup was really tough to watch. We have a lot of work to do. 27 turnovers and 10 of 19 from the line is not going to win a lot of games. I thought Dixon played well, and she was a force inside for them. We just a lot of things to work on."
On getting ready for Kentucky on a short turnaround...
"Yeah, I think we can. We're competitive and we want to win. If we get Brittany back, that will help, but if we don't, then someone else is going to have to step up. Natalie played well out there. I just think that we're going to get better if we can learn from this."
On Morris's three pointer with ten seconds left to go in regulation...
"We were in zone on that one. Somebody just didn't get out. That was the wing not getting out quick enough."
On missing a lot of wide open layups in the first half...
"I thought we shot ourselves in the foot in the first half. We could have had the lead early on, but we just kept having possession after possession where we just couldn't score. We have to put those baskets in next time, and I'm confident that we will. The good news is that we got good shots, so I think that's a positive."
UCLA Head Coach Nikki Caldwell
On the game in general...
"I think the thing about this team, and, I've said it from day one, is their resilience. It showed tonight by sending the game into double overtime. I'm very proud of these young ladies, their commitment to push themselves early on and on the road. A year ago this team probably would not have been able to win. Darxia Morris sat out most of the first half but then came in during the second half and scored big baskets for us. I thought that she did a good job on a great player, an All American candidate, Skylar Diggins, and really trying to make her work ninety-four feet. This team still has a lot of growing yet to do."
On the last play of regulation and the last play of the first overtime...
"You never know how things are going to play out. And my team didn't quit. If we're going to go down, we're going to go down the right way. At the end of the day, it's all about the playmakers coming up with the plays."
On using the defense to frustrate the Irish...
"I thought that we did that in the first half. And we did get that stretch where we were forcing some turnovers. We were doing a much better job of keeping them off of the boards during our transitional stretch and that helped a lot with our lead. These are the fundamentals, you've got to finish off your defense. We didn't do that at times, which gave them second and third opportunities."
