Notre Dame Women's Basketball
Notre Dame vs. Butler
November 28, 2010
Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center • Notre Dame, Ind.

Notre Dame Head Coach Muffet McGraw

On Notre Dame's three all-tournament team members...
"I thought Natalie Novosel had just a fantastic three-day tournament. She just shot the ball extremely well and got to the foul line. She basically did everything we asked on offense. She was really hard to guard. Butler had a lot of trouble containing her, and she took advantage of it. She did just a great job attacking the basket, and we are going to need that all season long. I'm really proud of Natalie. For Devereaux (Peters) and Erica (Solomon), those are some unsung heroes getting a little bit of notice, which is great. It was great seeing both of them come out and play well, and also to be noticed in playing well. We have a lot of weapons on our team and we have to continually keep shaking things up and keep everyone ready. I think different people on different nights are going to be ready to step up for us, and I think that happened in this tournament, especially with Erica."

On changing defenses during the first half...
"We probably subbed. We left 10 wide open threes. They had 10 wide open threes in the first half, and they made three each half. They didn't shoot it particularly well, but they were wide open. That's a problem for our defense. We got caught in screens, didn't communicate and we just weren't paying attention enough on defense. I think we probably had a little more sense of urgency after they made their first two early, and then I think we settled in. I wasn't really happy with the three-point defense today."

On the team's balanced scoring...
"All the starters in double figures - that hadn't happened yet this year. So that's a nice bonus for us, and some decent scoring from off the bench as well. I think they are all capable of leading us in scoring on any given night. Right now, Natalie is the person we are really looking to do a lot of the scoring. Certainly, everyone else in the starting lineup is capable of having that same kind of night."

On Notre Dame's three-point shooting throughout the game...
"Well, actually we weren't going to shoot any in the second half. We were 14-20 from the field, and 0-7 from behind the arc in the first half, so obviously our best offense was going inside - the mid-post was really open - and had the weak side pinned. We really could have exploited the post more, but we didn't. We should have looked in a little more. I thought we were settling for jumpers, just because they were playing zone. So, in the second half we tried to go a little more inside out. Brittany (Mallory) hit a couple, but other than that our shooting from the three-point line has not been good."

Notre Dame Players

Skylar Diggins • Sophomore • Guard
On the physical toll of playing three days in a row...
"Playing feisty teams, such as Butler and Wake Forest and those other teams that don't quit, you end up playing more minutes than you would like to, but this is good for us. We need more in-game experience, especially for our freshman. And this will give our post players - Devereaux (Peters) and Erica (Solomon) in making the all-tournament team - a lot of confidence going into the game against Baylor, where we will need them big. Physically, with fatigue, we just have to take care of our bodies and continue to stay mentally tough."

On looking ahead to next week's game at Baylor...
"We have a tough schedule and non-conference schedule. We just have to make sure we stay mentally tough, and being a young team, I think we have to prepare extra to do so."

On the development of Kayla McBride...
"Kayla is a good player. I would definitely consider her one of my partners on the team. She asks a lot of questions, and we talk before the game and after the game to get feedback. Kayla is an awesome teammate. She watches film, comes in to shoot around and she is a good player. I think playing for the USA team gave her a lot of experience and the ability to come in here. She is an amazing scorer, and just a head-smart player."

On Natalie Novosel's recent performances...
"It relieves a lot of pressure for me. If I drive and get a lot of attention, I know Natalie will be there to make a shot. When she's making shots like this, it's easier to go to her and call plays for her. Natalie's going to run the floor every time, and with her shooting like this, it alleviates a lot of pressure I could have as the point guard or our team could have when we need a bucket. We can just go to her."

Natalie Novosel • Junior • Guard
On getting into a rhythm on the floor...
"I think the preparation for this year has given me a lot of confidence. Just coming in, and just not letting anything get in my way, that mentality has come in with the intensity every game. Just being a scoring threat, and to be aggressive to the basket."

On her shot selection...
"I think Coach [McGraw] would want me to shoot more. Just to be a scoring threat every single time I get the ball, and try to create a shot. Instead of creating shots for my teammates, I should just be consistent in going to the rim and attacking."
