Notre Dame Falls to Rutgers
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers Women,s Basketball (4-1,1-0) team out- scored Big East rival Notre Dame (3-2, 0-1) 49-38 in the second half and win its first Big East game of the season, 80-67, in front 1,268 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
The Scarlet Knights defense was all over the Irish offense and was able to force 32 Notre Dame turnovers. The Fighting Irish shot only 40.9% from the field while Rutgers shot 48.3%.
Rutgers, depth was key in their victory as their bench went on to score 39 points. Sophomore Shawnetta Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa) was a monster off the bench. Stewart, who shattered Wilt Chamberlain,s Philadelphia Public League scoring record, netted 24 points, seven rebounds, and five steals in 23 minutes of action. Freshman point guard rookie Natasha Pointer (Chicago, Il) had 20 points and a game-high 11 assists. Sophomore Tomora Young (Red Bank, NJ), continued her outstanding season, with 16 points, five assists, and five rebounds.
The Fighting Irish were led by guards Danielle Green and Mollie Peirick each with 17 points.
