Notre Dame's Eight-Game Win Streak Snapped as Irish Lose to Boston College 78-76
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. --- Cal Bouchard's driving layup with five
seconds left in regulation lifted the Boston College Eagles to a 78-76
victory over Notre Dame. The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for the
Senior Mollie Peirick scored a career-high and game-high 26 points to lead
three Irish players in double figures. Freshman Ruth Riley recorded her
fourth straight double double as she netted 18 points and grabbed 11
rebounds. Sheila McMillen was the only other Irish player in double
figures as she finished with 13.
Notre Dame, which had not suffered a loss since dropping an 89-77 decision
at Wisconsin, falls to 11-5, 5-3 in the BIG EAST, while the Eagles improved
to 11-5, 6-2.
The Irish fougth back from from a seven-point second half deficit and took
the lead 48-47 on a Mollie Peirick three-pointer with 11:48 remaining in
the contest. From that point on the two teams battled back and fourth.
Boston College held a four-point advantage 68-64 with 3:48 remaining on a
Paula Basco layup, but the Irish took a 71-70 lead in the contest on two
free throws with 1:32 left in the game.
Notre Dame trailed 76-74 with 13 seconds left in the game when Mollie
Peirick was fouled by Jamie Cournoyer as she was attempting a three-point
shot. Peirick canned all three of the free throws and tied the game.
Bouchard, who had game-winning layup, finished with a team-high 19 points
and led five Eagle players in double figures. Allison Booth came off the
bench to score 14 points, while Paul Basco added 12, Aimee McGuire 11 and
Whitney Steele 10.
Notre Dame shot 42.4 percent from the field and just 26.7 from three-point
range, while the Ealges connected on 45.0 percent of their shots and 40.0
accuracy from three-point range.
The Irish outrebounded Boston College 40-33, but committed 17 turnover
compared to 11 for the Eagles.
Notre Dame returns to action on Wednesday, January 21 on the road at
Syracuse. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
