COACH STONE ON SCHMIDT: “Kristi is doing very well. She missed all of last spring due to injury. She has done a great job in her rehab and is constantly making progress.” FALL OF 2000: Rowed with the third varsity eight boat in the fourth seat at the Head of the Elk ... finished 18th at that race ... was a member of the third eight at the Head of the Grand, placing sixth ... raced with the second varsity eight in the second seat at the Head of the Rock earning 10th place ... opened the season with a fourth in the second eight at the Chicago Chase, missing a bronze by only five seconds. AS A FRESHMAN: Did not compete as a first-year athlete in 1999-2000 due to injury. PREP AND PERSONAL: Participated in soccer, cross country and track and field at Herscher High School ... was the team captain of the track and field team her senior year ... was nationally ranked in cross country as a sophomore ... participated in the state track meet while in high school ... a member of National Honor Society and CAPTAINS ... was editor of the newspaper and the yearbook ... one of two children for Paul and Marie Schmidt ... mother Marie played field hockey at the University of Toronto ... born Nov. 11, 1981, in Kankakee, Ill. ... enrolled in the College of Science. WHY NOTRE DAME?: “I am a member of the rowing team because it it one of the toughest experiences I can go through—to be at a school that is at the top both academically and athletically, to take an organic chemistry exam and then go row a 4K. Yet, if I can make it through this, it’s something to be proud of for the rest of my life.”
