Rowers Win Four Gold Medals at the Head of the Elk
Irish complete most successful regatta in young history
Oct. 29, 2000 Notre Dame, Ind. - The Notre Dame rowing team took home four gold medals and a bronze Sunday at the Head of the Elk regatta in Elkhart, Ind. The Irish won the varsity eight, the varsity four "A" and "B" divisions and the lightweight four, while taking third in the novice eight "C" race. The Irish claimed their first varsity eight gold at a regatta of this magnitude in the three-year history of the program. In an extremely competitive field, the Irish crew of Ann Marie Dillhoff, Melissa Alberding, Julia Kelly, Casey Buckstaff, Becky Luckett, Ashlee Warren, Katherine Burnett, Jamie Szefc and coxswain Claire Bula powered their way to first place in a time of 13:27.70. Indiana placed second in 13:32.79, while Michigan took the next four places in times ranging from 13:40.32 to 13:59.76. The Irish "B" boat of Anne Starks, Elizabeth Kinnier, Diana Price, Katie McCalden, Diana Laquinta, Kerri Murphy, Laura Aull, Leah Ashe and Erin Kiernicki was seventh in 14:00.23. Notre Dame dominated the varsity four events winning both the "A" and the "B" divisions. The "A" crew of Luckett, Warren, Burnett, Szefc, and Bula took another gold in a time of 14:52.82, narrowly defeating Indiana (14:54.43). Marquette was third in the "A" race in 15:12.12. In the "B" race, the team of Alberding, Kelly, Buckstaff, Dillhoff and cox Pam Swan were not to be outdone by the "A" team winning its race by over 20 seconds. Notre Dame finished in a time of 15:06.43. Indiana was second at 15:27.68, followed by the University of Chicago in 16:59.47. Next came the varsity lightweight four as the boat of Laquinta, Murphy, Aull, Ashe, Kiernicki collected yet another gold for the Irish, with the other Irish light four vessel finishing fifth. Notre Dame took first in 15:22.52, more than 25 seconds ahead of Purdue (15.48.06). Marquette was third in 15:52.06, followed by Miami (Ohio) in 16:02.87 and the Irish team of Erin Shea, Sara Andrews, Jessica Manske, Rebecca Campbell and Cassie Markstahler recording a time of 16:10.44. Other results for the Irish included thirds in the novice eight "B" and "D," fifths in the novice eight "C" and "A" races and the pairs race and a fourth in the novice eight "B" race. "Today was an excellent way to end the fall season," head coach Martin Stone says. "We rowed and beat some of the best teams in the region and the country.
