Irish Women in Fourth at Michigan State Invitational
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The University of Notre Dame women's golf team opened the 1997-98 season by surging to fourth place heading into Sunday's final round of the 15-team Spartan Fall Invitational, held at the Forest Akers West Golf Course.
Melby tied for 9thSenior co-captain Tracy Melby picked up right where she left off in the final season of the '97 spring season, when she took medalist honors at the Illinois Classic. Melby posted rounds of 79-79 in Saturday's first-day action to earn a share of ninth place among the 91-player field heading into the final round.
Notre Dame turned into rounds of 320 and 323 in the play-six/count-four format and stands firmly in fourth place heading into the final 18 holes on the par-72, 5,819-yard course. The Irish are in range of third place Iowa (636) while holding an eight stroke lead over Bowling Green (651) and an 13-shot cushion on Michigan.
Indiana (609) holds the team lead after two rounds, followed by host Michigan State (623). Notre Dame stood in third after Saturday's opening round of 320, four shots ahead of Iowa, but slipped to fourth after the Hawkeyes shot 312 over the next 18 holes.
Notre Dame received a big boost from Andrea Klee, who pieced together two of the best rounds of her career(79-80/159) to earn a share of 11th. Senior co-captain Katie Kling is tied for 18th after rounds of 83-79/162 while freshman Mary Klein opened her career with rounds of 81-85/166 to earn a share of 30th. Notre Dame's other first-day scores included a 167 from sophomore Beth Cooper (81-86) and a 176 from sophomore Brigid Fisher (88-88).
Two other freshman-Becca Schloss (169) and Danielle Villarosa (175)-had solid outings while competeing as individuals.
